Learning Objective

Today, I can: use the five-finger retelling to tell what the characters did to try to solve the problem in our story.

Think of how the sun makes water look sparkly on a sunny day. Can you think of something that shimmers, like maybe the stars or water?
Shimmering:
Shining with a gentle, glowing light that moves a little, like something sparkling.
Sometimes a dark forest or a loud noise can be frightening. What’s something that feels a little frightening to you, like a loud thunderstorm or a big shadow?
Frightening
Something that makes you feel scared or worried.
Imagine seeing a big, colorful rainbow after a rainy day—that’s glorious! Can you think of something glorious, like a place or thing that makes you say ‘Wow!?
Glorious
Something that is very beautiful, amazing, or wonderful.
I proclaim it’s time for recess! If you could proclaim something exciting, and out loud, what would you say to everyone?
Proclaims
To say something in a big, loud voice for everyone to hear.
It’s a bit like slime but even more surprising! Have you ever made slime or goo at home? What did it feel like?
OObleck
It is sticky, gooey stuff that can feel hard like a solid when you touch it but also move like a liquid.
Today we're reading about the Kingdom of Did and how are main characters solve a big problem.

Let’s Make Predictions!

What do you think the kingdom will be like? What kind of problem do you think Bartholomew might face? How do you think the story will end?

Activate Your Background Knowledge

Have you ever made a wish? What happened when you did?

In many stories, wishes don't always go the way we expect. Let’s think about that as we read!

Listen carefully and think about what’s happening in the story. I will stop and ask questions as we go. During the read-aloud, think about the characters, setting, problem, and solution. We will fill in our five-finger graphic organizer as we go!

Let’s Read Together!

At the end of the story, we’ll use our five fingers to help us retell the story to our friends!

Your Turn – Retell the Story

Now that we’ve finished reading use your Five-Finger Retell graphic organizer. to help you retell the story to a friend.

Think about how you can use this strategy to understand other stories you read!
