Introduzione alla plastica
La plastica è nata nei primi del ‘900 come materiale versatile e poco costoso.
Grazie alla sua resistenza, ha rapidamente sostituito materiali tradizionali come il vetro e il metallo, diventando un pilastro di settori come imballaggi, elettronica e medicina.
Inquinamento
L’inquinamento da plastica è diventato uno dei temi ambientali più pressanti: la produzione di oggetti in plastica usa e getta sta soverchiando la nostra capacità di gestirla. Questo tipo di inquinamento è più evidente nelle nazioni in via di sviluppo dell’Asia e dell’Africa, dove i sistemi di raccolta dei rifiuti sono spesso inefficienti o inesistenti.
La maggior parte della plastica che è nell’oceano arriva dalla terraferma. Oppure viene trasportata dai fiumi più grandi, che agiscono da nastro trasportatore raccogliendo immondizia su immondizia man mano che scendono a valle. Una volta che sono in mare, molti dei rifiuti plastici rimangono in acque costiere. Ma nel momento in cui vengono catturati dalle correnti oceaniche, possono andare a finire in tutto il mondo.

Ogni anno, circa 8 milioni di tonnellate di plastica finiscono negli oceani, equivalenti a gettare cinque buste di immondizia ogni 30 centimetri di costa. Le plastiche spesso contengono additivi che ne aumentano la durata, ma questi possono far sì che alcuni rifiuti impieghino almeno 400 anni per degradarsi.
