Real facts. Class discussion

How do you think people usually get to know new friends and partners nowadays?
1) At school or University (college) 2) At a bar, club, etc. 3) Through friends 4) At work 5) Online (e.g., on forums, social networking sites, etc. Is it necessary to be in a relationship nowadays? In other words, do you think people really need to find a partner and go out together?

Speaking practice

Strategies 2, 3 and 4

In pairs or small groups, discuss these ways of meeting a new partner:

  1. Starting a conversation with a stranger .
  2. Taking up a new activity. E.g., hobby, sport...
  3. Attending a social event for single people.
  4. Go on a blind date organised by a close friend.

Which situations are more effective to get in touch with new people and become friends, or something else..?

Guess the endings!

Read the beginnings of two stories. Then, try to guess what happened next. Tell your partner how you think their story ends and see how close you were! Then, find things in common in both stories.

  • Describe what you don't like so much and why

2 min. approx.

Think of two possible explanations to the creepy phenomenon shown in the picture:

  • Bride collapses when she's walking down the aisle
  • They drive her to the hospital but dies hours later from a heart attack
  • She's buried in the churchyard
  • Widower lays a bunch of flowers on his wife's grave every year.
  • A bouquet of flowers turns up every year on the grave even after widower's death.
