Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands, known for its artistic heritage, an elaborate canal system and narrow houses with gable roofs, legacies of the city's 17th century golden age. The museum quarter is home to the Van Gogh Museum, the Rijksmuseum, with works by Rembrandt and Vermeer, and the Stedelijk, which favours modern art. Cycling is an essential feature of the city, which has a large number of cycle paths.

curiosities
1. The City of BikesAmsterdam is known as the “City of Bikes” because there are more bikes than people! It's estimated that there are around 880,000 bicycles in Amsterdam, while the city’s population is just over 800,000. With over 500 km of bike paths, cycling is the most popular way to get around.2. The Canal System is ExtensiveAmsterdam’s canal system is more than just picturesque—it’s a marvel of engineering. The city has over 100 kilometers (62 miles) of canals, and over 1,500 bridges. The canals were originally constructed in the 17th century as a way to manage water and facilitate trade, and today they are a UNESCO World Heritage site.3. Amsterdam’s Red Light District is Older Than You ThinkAmsterdam’s famous Red Light District is often associated with modern liberal values, but it has a much older history. Prostitution in Amsterdam dates back to the 14th century. The area has evolved over time and remains an iconic part of the city's tolerant and open-minded culture.4. Amsterdam’s "Dutch Coffee Shops" Aren’t What You ThinkIn Amsterdam, “coffee shops” are places where you can legally buy and consume marijuana. These establishments are regulated by the government, and only cannabis is allowed to be sold (no other drugs). The first coffee shop opened in the city in the 1970s.5. The City Has No SkyscrapersDespite being a major European capital, Amsterdam has very few skyscrapers. This is because the city’s historic architecture is protected, and there are strict height restrictions to preserve the city's skyline. The tallest building in the city, the A'DAM Tower, is only 22 stories tall.
