Day 1 Ship

My father didn’t agree. He wanted me to have a good job and live a simple, comfortable life. ‘Please don’t go,’ he said. ‘You won't be happy. Sailors have a hard and dangerous life.’ But I was decided to go!One day I saw a very good friend. He said to me, ‘My father has a ship. We are sailing to London tomorrow, and to Africa after. Come with us!’ And I said ‘Yes!’ So, on September 2nd, 1651, I sailed to London and then to Guinea in Africa.

Day 1

My name is Robinson Crusoe. I am 27. I was born in the city of York, in the north of England. I lived in York with my parents. My father was from Germany and he was a good businessman. My mother was English. I like adventure. ‘I want to be a sailor and I want to travel around the world,’ I explained to my parents.

Day 1 Ship

In the afternoon, I swam to the wrecked ship. Inside there was rice, bread and salted meat. I discovered knives, a saw and an axe too. I took seven guns and a rifle. I also took books, paper and pens. Finally I rescued a parrot, a dog and two cats. Then I built a fortress near a cave because I needed a good place to keep all my provisions. I wrote on a long piece of wood: ‘I arrived here on September 30th 1659’. In front of my fortress I looked at the ocean and I understood that I couldn’t escape! I couldn’t escape but I was lucky to be alive!

Day 2

A NEW HOME

In 1659, I went on a ship again to South America. Near Brazil, there was a big tornado. During twelve days the rain and the wind didn’t stop. The ocean was angry. The storm was terrible. Our ship was destroyed. All my friends were dead! I was the only survivor on a desert island. And I had no food, no water and no gun!The first night, I was afraid to sleep on the beach because of wild animals. So I went up a tree and slept all night there. The next morning, I decided to explore the island under the sun. I ate plants because I was hungry. I drank water from the river because I was thirsty.

Day 1 Ship

I need to be more comfortable in my fortress so I developed my manual talents. I learnt how to make a table, chairs and boxes and I am quite good at pottery. I also started to make clothes with goatskins because my trousers and my shirt were really old. I needed to change them! And because the weather is usually sunny and very hot, I made myself a hat and an umbrella too. I can also make fire and now, I can relax on my bed and read and write at night. You see, my life is very busy. I work hard every day to survive. I never get bored. It is already 1665.

Day 3

A NEW LIFE ON THE ISLAND

I feel like a king on my island but danger is always near. For example, on April 16th 1660 (one year after my arrival), there was an earthquake and a violent storm. I was terribly afraid. It was a miracle that I didn’t die under the stones of my cave! Every day, I hunt for wild animals. I catch or kill birds, goats, fish or turtles. I also look for grapes, lemons, melons and oranges. I have all the food I need on the island because I can do farming. Goats give me milk and I grow rice and corn. I make my bread too.

Day 1 Ship

I started to feel happy again only three years after. But one day, I found something horrible on the beach. There were heads, arms and feet everywhere. And I saw bones. Human bones! ‘Cannibals!’ I thought. I was horrified and disgusted. I ran to my fortress. The next day, I saw the group of cannibals. They were thirty. They were singing, dancing around a fire and preparing their horrible food. They had two prisoners. They killed one and began to cook him. The second prisoner escaped and ran in my direction. I was going to help this poor man!

Day 4

A footprint in the sand

One morning, I was walking on the beach and saw something in the sand. I couldn’t believe my eyes! It was a footprint. The footprint of a man! How could this be ? I was afraid. I looked around me. I listened. I waited for long minutes. Nothing. I looked everywhere but I saw nobody! I was more and more afraid. Maybe this man wanted to kill me! After fifteen years alone on the island, I was scared and I prepared my rifles. I was hiding in my cave for three days and I didn’t make noise. When I finally got out and explored my island, I saw nobody and no other footprint.

Day 1 Ship

Friday was a young man, about twenty-five years old. He was tall and strong. He had a nice smile. He had brown skin, black hair, bright eyes and his teeth were white. He had no clothes and he was hungry and thirsty. So I gave him food and water, a shirt and trousers. I taught him to speak English. Soon he could say his name, ‘Master’, and ‘Yes’ and ‘No’. It was so good to hear a man’s voice again! I was lucky because Friday learnt English very fast. He helps me in the farm and he helps me to hunt. We are very good friends. Everything is alright now. I have a companion, pets, food and a home! I feel like a real king on this island!

Day 5

TODAY IS FRIDAY

I took my rifle and killed the cannibals who were running after the second prisoner. The prisoner stopped, too scared of the noise of my rifle! I asked the man ‘Hey! What’s your name?’ because I wanted to show him that I was friendly. Slowly, he walked in my direction. ‘What’s your name?’ I repeated. I didn’t understand his answer but I was so happy to hear words again! The first I heard after all these years alone. I really needed a friend I could talk to! 'Today is Friday,’ I said. ‘So I’m going to call you Friday,’ I explained.

Day 1 Ship

‘Yes, of course’ I replied. ‘But you must take me back to England.’ The Captain agreed immediately and thanked me. Friday and I freed the prisoners and gave them rifles. We went to the small boat with the Captain and his officers and then we got discreetly on the ship. The mutineers were surprised when they saw us. It was a long fight. Two mutineers died. The Captain said to the other mutineers: ‘We are strong, we have rifles. You must obey now or we will kill you!’ The mutineers decided to obey and surrender. Finally they prepared the ship for a long journey to England! On December 19th, 1686 - after twenty-seven years, two months and nineteen days - I finally said goodbye to my island and sailed home to England with Friday. I was so relieved!

Day 6

FINALLY FREE

After twenty-three years alone on the island and four years with Friday, one day, we noticed a ship near the island and a small boat on the beach. We hid and looked in silence. ‘Cannibals ?’ Friday asked. ‘No. You can see my country’s flag, the Union Jack on the mast of the ship. These men are English sailors and they have prisoners !’ At night, we went carefully to the beach to speak to the prisoners. One of them was the captain of the ship. ‘The sailors on the ship are mutineers. Yesterday there was a rebellion,’ the Captain explained. ‘Can you help us ?’

‘I have a good ship, uncle,’ he said. ‘I’m going to India and the Philippines… Come with me!’ And I said ‘Yes! And I am sure Friday will be happy to join us.’ And so, in 1694, I went to sea again, and had many more adventures with my friend Friday.

EPILOGUE

When I came back to England, I felt like a stranger in the country. I went home to York but my father and mother were dead now, and my two brothers had died too. Only the two sons of one of my brothers were alive. I bought a house and lived a quiet life with my two nephews. The younger nephew became a sailor and then the captain of a ship. Then I married and had three children, two sons and one daughter. When my wife died, my nephew visited me. He knows I don’t like to live a simple, comfortable life.
