Dengue Fever
Infectious Agent

Portal of Entry
Mode of Transmission
Susceptible Host
Portal of Exit
Break The Chain:
There is a vaccine (Dengvaxia), but it's only recommended for people who have already had dengue, as it can cause severe symptoms in first-time recipients
Reservoir
PPE for Healthcare Workers:
Gloves and protective clothing can be used to avoid exposure
The portal of exit for dengue fever is primarly through the saliva of infected mosquitoes. This is the main way the virus exits and spreads to new hosts.
BREAK THE CHAIN:
To prevent mosquitoes from biting infected indivudals
- use bed nets
- window screens
The dengue virus is the infectious agent that causes dengue fever, transmitted to humans by Aedes mosquitoes; it does not spread directly from person to person.
Size & Shape: the dengue virus is relatively small (about 50 nanometers) and round in shape, with a spiky outer layer Pattern of Growth: it grows inside human immune cells and spreads in the blood, causing symptoms Symptoms: pain in the abdomen, fevers, fatigue, loss of apetite, nausea, etc
No direct way to destroy the virus, but controlling mosquito populations helps reduce the spread of infections
Dengue Virus Particles
The virus enters the human body through a mosquito bite. When the mosquito bites, it injects saliva containing the virus directly into the bloodstream.
BREAK THE CHAIN:
Avoid outdoor activities during peak mosquito activity (early morning & late afternoon)
People living or traveling in tropical areas are at a higher risk. Areas with poor mosquito control increase susceptibility.
Individuals with weakened immune systems or those living in crowded urban areas are more likely to contract dengue fever.
BREAK THE CHAIN:
- Vaccination
- Awareness about avoiding mosquito bites
How it Spreads: The dengue virus is primarily spread by the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito. These mosquitoes become infected when they bite a person who has the virus in their blood.
Indirect Transmission: Dengue cannot be transmitted directly from one person to another; it only spreads through mosquito bites.
BREAK THE CHAIN:
- Apply insect repellent to protect yourself from bites.
- Wear protective clothing to reduce exposure to insects.
- Install window screens to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home.
Transmission Cycle
The primary reservoir consists of Aedes mosquitoes, especially Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, which thrive in tropical and subtropical regions. The virus does not survive in humans as a reservoir; instead, humans are infected when bitten by an infected mosquito.
BREAK THE CHAIN:
Eliminate mosquito breeding sites by removing standing water, like in old tires, containers, or pots
