Celebrate Diversity and Treating Everyone Fairly

It is important that you treat everyone fairly regardless of any differences. For children to develop healthy and complete identities, the adults in their lives must provide them with a positive understanding of their race, ethnicity, and culture (Novotney, 2023).

There are many people around the world, including me and you, and our classmates. Everyone has a different cultures: traditions, foods, music, ways of dressing and beliefs, but you must treat everyone the same. Everyone deserves respect, it does not matter if they look different than you do! ALWAYS treat others how YOU want to be treated. Each of us is a piece of puzzle, together we are complete!

Activity: Self-Portrait

We are all so special! Take a look in our special mirror and draw a beautiful portrait of yourself. When you are done, we will do a gallery walk and look at each other's drawing, share something special, then we will put us all together. We all make up our classroom!

What is diversity? Can you give me one example? Two examples?

Should you treat someone different based on how they look? How should you treat others?

Is it okay for others to like different things? Eat different foods? Play different games?

Conclusion:

It is important to begin teaching about diversity and equity/equality from a young age. As educators, we must celebrate diversity and teach students empathy and respect. ALL of us must treat others with respect regardless of their backgrounds, families are their first teachers but we are an integral part as well. We must teach them to always treat others how they want to be treated.
