SOME OF THE COUNTRIES WITH THE HIGHEST GENDER GAP

To reduce the gender gap, we need to increase women's participation in the workplace and we need to put an end to the difference in salaries between men and women for the same job. to reduce the gender gap, steps forward are being made, for example, women in Saudi Arabia can use cinemas, stadiums, join the armed forces, apply for passports and open businesses without male consent, and drive with a license without the presence of a man. Unfortunately, the gender gap is still very high, but with everyone's will it can be closed quickly.

WHAT CAN WE DO TO CLOSE THE GENDER GAP ?

Women's rights in Afghanistan have changed very significantly over the past few years, particularly in the phase between 2000 and 2001, with the fall of the Taliban regime, which had imposed terrible limitations on them, and the return of the Taliban in 2021. After numerous civil wars and regime changes, women's rights have often been hindered by fundamentalists, who have been in power in different historical eras.

AFGHANISTAN: THE BIGGEST GENDER GAP

Many companies are trying to stop the actions of the Taliban, who are moving the opposite of what they said in 2021: "We will bring rights to women and girls, we will take care of them", and right now, the only thing they are managing to do is deprive them of a future.

To date, in 2024, women are not recognized as having fundamental rights. The women's empowerment of Afghan women faces even more obstacles than it did before, with several prohibitions in different life contexts The Taliban have violated the rights of women and girls to education, work and freedom of movement. Dozens of women are killed because they do not wear a veil that covers their faces, because they wear it badly, because of a hair out of place

The status of women in Iran has changed over time, but women's rights, although recognised by the 1979 Constitution, are still limited compared to the Western criteria. Iranian women, under the law of Sharia, enjoy social and economic dignity, but they must comply with obligations such as the use of the hijab and clothing that covers arms and legs. Although they have access to various roles, including political positions (some women, such as Masoumeh Ebtekar, have held high positions), many rights acquired during the monarchical period have been reduced. In June 2024, Zohreh Elahian became the first woman to run for the presidency of Iran.

wHAT IS THE SITUATION IN IRAN ?

Saudi women who defend human rights are subject to prison sentences, travel bans and restrictions on freedom of expression. In 2016, Saudi Arabia ranked 141ª out of 144 in the Global Gender Gap Report, with a worsening compared to the previous year. Despite this, some progress has been made, such as the right to vote for women in 2015 and the end of the driving ban and segregation in theatres in 2018. However, in the current government there are no women in positions of power, not even as deputy ministers. On a legal level, in 2012 Souad al-Shammari became the first woman to assist women in court, followed in 2013 by Arwa Al-Hujaili, the first practising lawyer in the country.
