Building Trust
You cannot be an effective Coach if you do not have the trust of the teachers. They need to see you as person who supports them. My motto is "I am a teacher first and my job is to support and inspire teachers to be learners". I can't do that if I do not have their trust and respect. ~Candace Hall Instructional Coach, Richardson, Texas
Would you trust Him? .
On your table you will find a plastic bag with trustworthy and untrustworthy traits. Please read the traits and sort by trustworthy or not-trustworthy. .
Chapter Roadmap
The first part of building trust is simply to be an ethical person - we need to be people of character. Trusting people - we trust people when we know they want us to succeed. Being honest is a critical part of building trust. One way to demonstrate character is by being transparent. We need to be as transparent as we can in order to build trust.
Character
Realibility ...
Reliability is an essential characteristic of trustworthiness. As coaches, we must do what we say and follow through with our commitments. To ensure reliability, we need to be intentional about how we use our time. We have to be careful not to over-commit. When you make a commitment, you build hope, when you keep a commitment, you build trust.
Competence
To increase trust, you must have competence.
Your competence is viewed as skill, intelligence, and effectiveness is taken as evidence that you are competent.
We trust people more when they know what they are talking about and follow through on what they say
Competence should be shown with eye contact, will power, and humility.
Coaches should have a deep knowledge of the teaching strategies they share and can be able to describe them precisely.
Coaches need to walk the talk. Do not ask what you aren't willing to do.
Quote
Warmth
Give credit to those who have helped when there are successes; likewise take the blame when needed rather than letting others take the blame.
Stewardship
We foster trust when we put others' needs before our own. Expressing concern and care for others is key.
We can demonstrate stewardship by not being self-focused, monitoring our thinking, and making sure the conversation is about everyone involved.
Taking time to truly listen is one of the most respectful things we can do." -Jim Knight
Trust: Putting It All Together
- People share thoughts openly in conversations when they trust each other.
- If there is no trust in the conversations, the conversations "can be cautious, empty, even frustrating and dehumanizing."
- To build more trust, we must believe in equality, autonomy, nonjudgmentalism and the fact others all deserve to heard.
- Empathy allows us to become better listeners- which makes it possible to connect with others to find out what we have in common.
- To become a better listener, it takes planning and practice.
- Getting better at conversation is very important. When our communication gets better it improves all facets of our lives; at work, in the community, at home, etc.

"The decision to trust is made almost entirely unconciously and is based on the extent to which you project warmth and competence. Warmth is a signal that you have good intentions toward your perceiver, competence signals that you are capable of acting on those intentions. ~Halvorson
