Centripetal Force

How many different tracks are there?

  • Is there a loop?
  • Does the marble go upside down?
  • Does the marble keep its speed?
  • Does the marble touch the loop the entire time?

Is there a hill? Is the track stable? Does the marble complete the track smoothly? Is the marble placed at the starting point or pushed?

Straight tracks do not count. Don't count tracks just because they are a different color--only count them if they are used in different ways.

THEME

Group Collaboration

Marble Continuity

Did the ENTIRE group work together every day? Most of the time? Half of the time? Less than half of the time?

Is there a theme? Is the theme creative? Is the theme recognizable? Is the theme neat and presentable?

Does the marble go from start to finish without falling off?

Project Completion: Is it completed on time and presentable Or does it need some work?

Essential Question

In what ways do the principles

of energy conservation and

transformation apply to the design and performance of roller coasters?

Learning Target

I can design and test a roller coaster track for a marble. I can explain how kinetic energy, potential energy, and centripetal force work together to keep the marble on the track.

NGSS Standard

MS-ETS1-1 - Define the criteria and constraints of a design problem with sufficient precision to ensure a successful solution. MS-ETS1-2 - Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem. MS-ETS1-4 - Develop a model to generate data for iterative testing and modification of a proposed object, tool, or process such that an optimal design can be achieved.

What am I learning?

“Students will explore and understand the concepts of kinetic and potential energy, as well as centripetal force, by designing and testing a roller coaster track for a marble. They will observe how height (potential energy) influences speed (kinetic energy) and analyze energy transformations, while applying engineering design principles to create a functional track that demonstrates the effects of centripetal force on the marble's motion throughout the roller coaster.”

Centripetal Force

“Centripetal force is the force that keeps objects moving in a circular path. It pulls them toward the center of that circle. Without this force, objects would fly off in a straight line.”
Imagine you’re riding a roller coaster that goes through loops. When the coaster is at the top of a loop, gravity pulls it down toward the ground, which helps keep the coaster on track. As the coaster moves down, gravity works with its speed to create the force that keeps it from flying off the track. Centripetal force is what helps pull the roller coaster inward, allowing it to make those exciting turns and loops safely.

The visual communication step by step:

  • Plan the structure of your communication.
  • Prioritize and give visual weight to the main points.
  • Define secondary messages with interactivity.
  • Establish a flow throughout the content.
  • Measure the results.

Write a great headline

Visual content is a universal, cross-cutting language, much like music. We are capable of understanding images from millions of years ago, even from other cultures.

Our brain is biologically prepared to process visual content. Almost 50% of our brain is involved in processing visual stimuli.

A great title

We better capture visual content. Visual content is associated with cognitive and psychological mechanisms.

Things come in through the eyes, the first image is what counts. We associate visual content with emotions.

  • Your coaster must include at least one hill and loop to demonstrate energy transformations.
  • Your track must have 5 different types of tracks (this does not include a straight track).
  • Your track must have a theme.
  • The marble must be able to travel from the starting point to the end of the track without stopping or falling off.
  • The design should clearly demonstrate the concepts of potential and kinetic energy—showing how height affects speed.
  • The group must collaborate effectively, with each member contributing according to their role.

Criteria

  • Only the provided materials (paper and tape) may be used to construct the track..
  • The roller coaster track must not be larger than the table.
  • The track cannot be taped to the table, wall, or chair.

Constraints
