1) Complete the Track Sheet. You should NOT have a zero by anything. If you have a ZERO, it means you need to make that track piece.
3) Make one of each:- Funnel
- Small Funnel
- Merge & switch
- Catch
- Half Pipe
- Jump
- Ladder
- Mega Wide Curve
- Stairs
- Switchback
- Zigzag
- Rotating Arm
2) These pieces should be already done:
- Columns
- Diagonal Supports

objective
MS-ETS1-1 - Define the criteria and constraints of a design problem with sufficient precision to ensure a successful solution. MS-ETS1-2 - Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem. MS-ETS1-4 - Develop a model to generate data for iterative testing and modification of a proposed object, tool, or process such that an optimal design can be achieved.
NGSS Standard
“Students will explore and understand the concepts of kinetic and potential energy, as well as centripetal force, by designing and testing a roller coaster track for a marble. They will observe how height (potential energy) influences speed (kinetic energy) and analyze energy transformations, while applying engineering design principles to create a functional track that demonstrates the effects of centripetal force on the marble's motion throughout the roller coaster.”

Imagine you’re riding a roller coaster that goes through loops. When the coaster is at the top of a loop, gravity pulls it down toward the ground, which helps keep the coaster on track. As the coaster moves down, gravity works with its speed to create the force that keeps it from flying off the track. Centripetal force is what helps pull the roller coaster inward, allowing it to make those exciting turns and loops safely.
Centripetal Force
“Centripetal force is the force that keeps objects moving in a circular path. It pulls them toward the center of that circle. Without this force, objects would fly off in a straight line.”
&
Constraints
- Only the provided materials (paper and tape) may be used to construct the track..
- The roller coaster track must not be larger than the table.
- The track cannot be taped to the table, wall, or chair.
Criteria
- Your coaster must include at least one hill and loop to demonstrate energy transformations
- The marble must be able to travel from the starting point to the end of the track without stopping or falling off.
- The design should clearly demonstrate the concepts of potential and kinetic energy—showing how height affects speed.
- The group must collaborate effectively, with each member contributing according to their role (e.g., technician, data analyst, project manager).
