Supporting Students with Challenging Behavior in the Classroom
Main points
- Behavior is functionally related to the teaching environment
- Look for patterns of behavior that suggest “functional relationships”
- Teach replacement behavior and provide multiple opportunities to practice
- Focus on what you want students to do “instead” (replacement behaviors)
- Behavior is learned
- Function identified as Attention
Implementation
Based on what I've learned, I intend to instruct students in replacement behavior and find more chances to practice appropriate behaviors. I will also give positive praise to my students throughout the whole day, no matter if they are in a behavior or not. While I will be setting expectations, the most crucial aspect is that everyone in the classroom will learn from their mistakes. Finally, I will be stepping back more and considering the whole picture to assist with the behaviors.
