Title of the document: L.S. Lowry and industrial EnglandThis document fit with the theme “Art et contestation” as it shows how art reflects and critiques social issues. Lowry’s paintings illustrate the impact of industrialization on workers lives, depicting their daily struggles in a dark, oppressive environment.Lowry is known for his industrial scenes of northern England, often filled with simplified human figures called “matchstick men.” He initially disliked the factory town of Pendlebury, but he eventually became fascinated by it. This transformation is visible in his paintings, which combine detachment and admiration for the grim, polluted landscape.Lowry paintings resonate with me because they capture the monotony and pollution of industrial life, yet there is also rhythm and movement. They show how one can find beauty even in grey, harsh environments. This reminds me of how I sometimes start to appreciate small, simple details in my own surroundings.Lowry’s work makes us think about the impact of industrialization and the resilience of people facing tough conditions. His painting show that art can encourage us to see familiar realities in a new way.

Title of the document : Oliver Twist at the Workhouse by Charles DickensThis is an extract from Oliver Twist, a novel written by Charles Dickens in 1838. In this passage, we see a young orphan, Oliver Twist, who is extremely hungry due to the very limited portion of food provided in the workhouse. Despite his fear, Oliver step forward to ask for more food, which is shocking and almost scandalous for the adults in charge. This scene highlights the terrible living conditions and the strict rules imposed on orphans and poor children in Victorian England. In our English class, we study Oliver Twist as part of the theme “Art et contestation.” This text is a perfect example of how literature can serve as a powerful tool for social criticism. Dickens uses the character of Oliver and the harsh reality of the workhouses to criticize the treatment of the poor and the indifference of society toward vulnerable children. This passage allows us to reflect on social injustice and the role of art in raising awareness about unfair systems. I found this passage both moving and disturbing. The way Dickens describes the boys’ constant hunger and how they polish their bowls, hoping for more food, really affected me. The fact that Oliver’s simple request for "more" leads to shock and even horror shows just how dehumanizing and strict the workhouse rules were. It’s sad to realize that children like Oliver were seen as less deserving of basic needs like food and care. This passage made me think about how important it is for society to protect and care for the most vulnerable, rather than punishing them for their poverty. Dickens’s writing made me feel sympathy for Oliver, and it reminded me that literature can be a powerful way to inspire compassion and challenge injustice

Title of the document : London by William BlakeThis is a poem titled London, written by William Blake in 1794 as part of his Songs of Experience. In this poem, Blake describes his journey through the streets of London, observing the sadness, fear, and suffering on people faces. He criticizes the institutions and social structures that contribute to this misery, using powerful and dark imagery to convey a sense of oppression and hopelessness. The poem is structured into four quatrains and uses a simple ABAB rhyme scheme, which reinforces the regularity and inescapability of the suffering he describes. We studied this poem in our class under the theme “Art et contestation.” Blake’s London is a prime example of how poetry can challenge and criticize social injustices. Written during the Industrial Revolution, this poem reflects Blake’s opposition to the negative impact of industrialization and the failure of institutions like the Church and the monarchy to address the suffering of the poor. Through London, we see how artists use their work to reveal the hidden suffering in society and provoke readers to question the status quo.Reading London made me realize the power of poetry to address social issues. Blake’s imagery is dark and intense, and words like “cry,” “curse,” and “blights” really convey a sense of despair and injustice. The line "mind-forg'd manacles" struck me the most because it suggests that people are trapped by invisible chains, perhaps imposed by society or even their own minds. It’s a reminder that freedom is not only physical but also mental. The way Blake describes the suffering of soldiers, chimney-sweepers, and even infants shows how every social class is affected in some way by the oppressive structures of the time. This poem made me feel a mix of sadness and anger at the indifference of those in power, and it reinforced the importance of speaking out against injustices

Title of the document: Champions of Justice Champions of Justice is a painting by Ted T. Ellis, created in 1993. It shows a group of people walking together infront of a giant Statue of Justice in the backgrund. The individulas are dress in formal clothing and seem to be marching with pourpose and unity. The blindfolded statue with it’s scales is an important simbol of impartiality and fairness, suggesting that justice should be blind and not influensed by race, gender, or socail status. This painting connects to our studys on justice, equality, and fairness, especially in relations to the justice sistem. We have discussed how justice should treat everyones equally, regardless of thier background. The theme of fighting for equall rights, as portrayd in the painting, ties into ideas we discussed in class about social movements, activism, and the legall battles for civil rights. Personally, I find this painting very inspiring. The people in the artwork seems to be standing together for justice, wich is a powerful image. It reminds me of the importance of speaking out aganst injustice and fighting for equallity. The symbolism of the blindfolded Lady Justice in the background really struck me, because it shows how the legal system is supposed to treat everyone impartialy. I felt a sense of hope from the artwork, as it shows that individuals can stand up for what’s right, even in difficult circustances.

Title of the document: 12 Angry Men by Sidney Lumet 12 Angry Men is a 1957 film that focuses on the deliberations of a jury in a murder trial. The film explores how the jurors, all men, are initialy ready to convicts the young defendent, but one man stands up for what believes to be right and challenges the group assumption. The film highlights how personal biases, emotions, and group pressure can affect legal decissions. It shows the power of standing up for justice, even when it’s difficult. The film is directly relaited to the justice system and the idea that every person deserv a fair trial. It shows the human element behind the law, emphasizing how peoples personal experiences and biases can affect the process. I was really impresed by the way 12 Angry Men depicted how a single persons believes can change the opinions of others. The tension and the way the characters interact with each other realy made me think about the importance of questioning things and standing up for fairness, even if it’s difficult. The film also made me reflect on how bias can be so subtel and yet have such a big impact on desicions, especily in the legal system. One of my favorite movie i've seen in 2024 thank you mrs Owerse.
Title of the Document: Ernest Gaines, A Lesson Before Dying Jefferson, a young uneducate black man, is accused of the murder of Mr. Gropé, a white storekeeper. The prosecutor argued that Jefferson and the other two had gone there with the full intention of robbing the old man and killing him. When the old man and the other two robbers were all dead, he stuffed the money into his pockets and celebreted the event by drinking over their still-bleeding bodies. The defense argued that Jefferson was innocent of all charges except being at the wrong place at the wrong time. There was absolutely no proof that there had been a conspiracy between him and the other two. The fact that Mr. Gropé shot only Brother and Bear was proof of Jefferson innocence. This text is a perfect example of how the justice system can be influenced by bias and prejudice, which we have studied in class. We have looked at how race and social status can shape people perceptions and decisions in a trial. The prosecutor's language dehumanizes Jefferson, calling him a "boy", a "fool" and an "animal" which shows how his color skin influences the way he is perceived and treated by society. This links directly to our discussions on inequality in the justice system and how racism can affect the fair of trials. I found this passage frustrating and powerful. It shows how easily the justice system can be corrupted by personal prejudices. Jefferson’s treatment is a direct result of the dehumanizing language used by the prosecutor and the bias in the system. It made me reflect on how much work is still needed to ensure that all individuals are treated equally, especially in the context of legal trials. The fact that Jefferson was sentenced to death despite the lack of solid evidence is a reminder of the many injustices that occur due to systemic racism.

Title of the Document: "There Is Always Hope" by Banksy Banksy is a famous British street artis known for his controvertial and politicaly provocative graffiti. "There Is Always Hope" show a little girl trying to catch a balloon with a heart shape, which is flying away. The meaning mixes the inocence of childhood with the idea of hope and loss, making peoples reflect about society problems. His anonymat make his art more special, because it’s not about fame but about the massage. This art work relate to the theme “Art et contestation” because it shows how art can challenge the society rules and brings hope during struggles. Banksy's works critiques many politicals and socials issues, and he uses public spaces to make strong messages for everyone to see. This picture touched me a lot because it shows a universal emotion: hope and also sadness. The image is simple but very deep, and it makes you think about how important hope can be in difficults moments. For me, it’s a good exemple that art doesn’t need to be complicated to have a strong affect.

Title of the document : The Boys (TV Series)The Boys is a TV series based on a comic that shows superheroes as corrupt, violent, and driven by fame and money. Instead of being idealized figures, they are portrayed as flawed and selfish, using their powers for personal gain. The show follows a group of ordinary people, led by Billy Butcher, who try to expose these heroes for what they really are. It critiques modern society's obsession with celebrity, corporate control, and media manipulation.I chose The Boys because it fits with the theme “Art et contestation.” The series protests against the way power, especially in media and corporations, is used to manipulate the public and hide the flaws of influential figures. Just like artists use their work to speak out against injustices, The Boys uses the superhero genre to critique how the public is often misled by false images of heroism and virtue. Watching The Boys made me think about how media and big companies shape our view of "heroes." The superheroes in the show are a direct critique of the way celebrities and powerful people can abuse their status. I was struck by how the show exposes the difference between the public image and the real behavior of those in power. The characters of Homelander and The Seven are shown as invincible but corrupt, which made me reflect on the dangers of unchecked power. This series really made me reconsider the idea of who is truly a hero in society and how those in power often hide behind a false image to avoid accountability

Title of the document: I Have a Dream by Martin Luther King Jr. This iconic speech was delivered by Martin Luther King during the walk on Washington for jobs and freedom. In his speech, Luther King calls for an end to racism and segregation in America, painting a vision of a future where equality prime. His use of rhetorical devices, repetition, and powerful imagery creates a compelling and persuasive argument for civil rights. Luther King speech embodies “L’art du débat” because it demonstrates how words can inspire change and challenge injustice. Through his eloquent delivery, King debates the morality of segregation and the need for equality, presenting a vision of hope and unity. This aligns with the idea that art in this case, the art of public speaking can mobilize people to take action and rethink societal norms. Listening to this speech is incredibly inspiring. King’s words remind us of the power of language to bring people together and push for meaning change. His ability to articulate the dreams of millions of oppressed individuals shows how debate and dialogue can become tools for justice and equality.
Title of the document: This Is America by Childish Gambino This Is America by Childish Gambino is a very famous song released in 2018. The music video became really popular and shows important topics like racism, gun violence, and the difference between Black culture and American society. The video mix happy, energetic images with shocking ones. The song talks about how people focus on pop culture while ignoring problems like violence and racism. The lyric "This is America," is repeated while bad things happen in the video, showing a contrast between the song tone and the violence in society. This song is a great example of “L’art du débat” because it use both music and image to talk about important issues like racism, police violence, and society problems. The lyrics and visual make the listener think about the contradictions in American society. Childish Gambino uses art to make people think about how Black Americans are treated, using music and images to push for change. The song itself is a protest, calling people to look at the difficult truth that are often ignored. This Is America had a big impact on me because it shows the real issues of racism and violence in the United states. The way the song mix happy music with dark and violent pictures made me realize how society sometimes ignore problems. It made me think about how art can force us to face reality we often try to dodge. This song is to wake up people to see the problems around them and take action. It shows how powerful music and art can be in making us think about change.

Title of the document: Suffragettes and the 19th AmendmentThis set of documents focuse on the struggle for womens right to vote in the early 20th century, showing the opposition they faced and the social norms of the time. The posters and text together illustrate how the fight for equality was not just about changing laws but also about changing minds and challenging traditional ideas about gender roles. This fits with the theme “Expression et construction de soi”.The posters show how anti-suffragist campaigns tried to make the women's movement look silly and wrong. A Suffragette’s Home focuses on the idea that a woman’s true job was only to care for the house, showing a tired, annoyed husband and a messy home. The second set of posters shows suffragettes as scary and unwanted, using humor and silly drawings to make their demands look bad. They say that if you are a suffragettes, you will be ugly and ridiculous. These images show the strong pressure and obstacles women had when they tried to change how people saw them.Through these drawings, we see how the way suffragettes showed themselves was very brave. By getting involved in public, they changed what it meant to be a woman, from weak to strong. The movement’s smart use of public events and showing themselves in a certain way is an example of how people can change how society thinks. In the other document, the text tells us that women were exepected to focus on houseworks and motherhood and not politic, wich was for men. They had to be submissive and a good mother and wifeThese images speak to me a lot. They show how brave the suffragettes were to fight against a society that made fun of them. Their struggle reminds me of how showing who you are can be a way to bring change and be strong. The most beautiful is that some women of the movement wanted to give to black people right too and were fighting for them

Title of the Document: "From Georgian England to Victorian England: is change in sight for upper class ladies?"This text is an article from The Saturday Review published in 1859. It talks about the roles and expectations for women in Victorian society. The author argues that women should be encouraged to marry instead of working, saying that marriage protects women from the "necessity of self-support." The article presents working women as "social anomalies" and warns that if women try to become independent, it could harm social values. The writer use strong words to suggest that women should stay at home, and if they try to work or be independent, they risk failing "in business," which here means failing in their "true" role as wives and mothers. In our English class, we study this document as part of the theme “Expression et construction de soi”. This article helps us understand the limited roles that were forced on women in the 19th century. It reflects the idea that a woman main purpose was to support men, take care of children and manage the house. If a woman tried to work or be independant, it was seen as dangerous for society. This text shows us how society shaped womens identities and choices back then and how they had to conform to certain expectations. By exploring this document, we can also discuss how this type of thinking has evolved (or sometimes still exists) today.I found this text disgusting and horrible. The way the writer dismisses the idea of women being independent shows how deep gender inequalities was in Victorian era. The words "barbarous and imperfect civilisation" to describe a society where women work for themselves feel extreme and unfair to a modern reader. It makes me think about how hard it must have been for women who didn’t fit in these norm. Reading this made me realize how much has changed for gender equality, while also making me think about some stereotypes that are still present today

Title of the Document: "Marriage and the Fashionable Society of Georgian England"This document explains the historical context of Georgian England (1714-1830) and the Regency period, a time when British society was defined by strict class divisions, the rise of industry, and strong social expectation. It describes how King George III, known as the mad king, was unable to rule because of his illness, leading his son, the Prince of Wales, to become the Prince Regent. The Prince Regent was known for his luxury, expensive taste, and love for the arts, creating a splendid but extravagant culture during the Regency era. However, under this beautiful image were hidden many people living in poverty and social inequality. In our English class, we study this document as part of the theme “Expression et construction de soi” with the sub-theme "mise en scène de soi." It shows how the upper class displayed their identity through wealth, architecture, and fashion, while the lower classes were often ignored. This period also reveals how leaders’ personalities, like that of the Prince Regent, could shape society’s values and priorities. By analyzing this context, we can see how people in power used luxury and "good taste" to define themselves, sometimes forgetting the struggles of others. This idea of "mise en scène de soi" is shown in the way that the wealthy tried to create a perfect image, even if it was only for appearance.Personally, I found this text both interesting and a bit surprising. It’s amazing to think that a king could spend so much on parties, buildings, and art while many of his people were suffering. The Prince Regent’s lifestyle seems almost selfish, focusing on his own pleasure instead of the needs of his country. It made me realize how different social expectations were at that time and how much influence leaders had on culture. This document helped me see the importance of self-presentation and how it can affect a whole society. The text made me feel both impressed by the rich culture of the Regency and disappointed by the lack of attention to social problems

Title of the document: Malala Yousafzai’s Speech at the United Nations I chose a speech by Malala Yousafzai, a young activist from Pakistan who speaks up for girls right to go to school. She gave this speech in 2013 at the United Nations, just one year after being attacked by the Taliban for going to school. In her speech, Malala talk about her personal experience and use her story to bring attention to the millions of girls who can’t go to school. She stands in front of world leaders, sharing her strong beliefs and asking them to take action for education and equality. This document connects with our theme of "Expression et construction de soi". Malala use her voice and her story to make a big impact on the world, showing how she sees herself as a fighter for justice. By putting herself on the world stage, she builds an image of courage and responsibility. This speech is a great exemple of how people can use their personal experiences to speak out for others and make a change. Malala’s speech really moved me because it shows how powerful words can be, even from someone so young. I remember Malala, I don't know how but I followed her story closely when I was little. It shocked me deeply when I learned that she had been shot in the head but that she survived. She is an incredible woman who permite for a lot of women to gain rights. Her story reminds me that no matter who you are or where you come from, you can speak up for what you believe is right. Malala's courage shows that "mise en scène de soi" isn’t just about creating imagination, it’s about using that imagination to stand up for others.
Title of the Document: Her, by Spike Jonze In Her, Theodore is a lonely man who writes letters for a living in a future version of Los Angeles. He starts an unusual romantic relationship with Samantha, an AI with a voice that grows and change over time. The film focuse on Theodore’s emotional journey, as his relationship with Samantha makes him question his ideas about love, self-identity, and the role of technology in personal growth. Samantha, even though she’s not human, becomes an important part of Theodore’s life, helping him rediscover his feelings and his ability to love. As their relationship continues, the film shows how both characters (one human, one robot) deal with their changing identities and place in the world. This film fit the theme “Expression et construction de soi” and the axis “Mise en scène de soi” because it talks about how we build our identity and express ourselves in today’s world. Her tells the story of a man, Theodore, who gets close to an artificial inteligence system, Samantha. The film asks questions about how we define who we are and how relationships, even with machines, can change the way we see ourselves. Another reason why i choose this movie for my personal document is because it transmit the same idea as the documents seen in class but in a totally different way and era, with technologies and new questionning. What I really liked about the film was how it showed the difficulty of figuring out who we are. Theodore, as a character, wasn’t sure about his own value and had trouble with his emotions, but through his relationship with Samantha, he started to express himself more. The film shows that expressing yourself is not always easy and can be influenced by things around you.

Title of the document: Exotic Britain This document is a portrait and text about Abdul Karim, a young Indian man who became close to Queen Victoria in the 19th century. The portrait show Abdul in traditional Indian clothing, painted by Rudolf Swoboda in 1888. The text explains how Abdul, originally the servant Queen Victoria, became her confidant, a friendship that shocked many people. It also describes the Durbar Room at Osborne House, decorated in Indian style to reflect the Queen’s love for India. This document fit with the theme “Voyages, territoires, frontières” and the axis “Exploration et aventure.” Queen Victoria’s fascination with India is a form of cultural exploration. Although she never physically travel to India, she brought India to herself through her connection with Abdul Karim and by surrounding herself with Indian art, symbols, and architecture, like the Durbar Room. The Durbar Room is symbolic, with its “intricate carvings” and Indian designs, giving the Queen a sense of being in a distant land without leaving England. This shows her fascination with Indian culture, even though it was part of the British Empire. The text even mention that Queen Victoria had a “marble ceiling, balconies with jail work” and other Indian-style decorations installed, creating her own Indian sanctuary in England. In my opinion, the relationship between Queen Victoria and Abdul Karim goes beyond the "frontier" of her time. The Queen went against expectations by forming a friendship with Abdul, an Indian, at a time when racial and cultural difference were source of discrimination. This shows her adventurous spirit not in the traditional sense of exploring unknown lands, but by exploring cultural relationships. The Koh-i-Noor diamond, which Abdul presented to the Queen, also carries strong symbolism. It represents the wealth and power of the British Empire and was taken from India as part of the Crown Jewels. For the Queen, though, it may have also symbolized a personal connection to India. This adds complexity to her relationship with Abdul, mixing personal and political meaning

Title of the document: Imperial Federation Map This map, made in 1886, shows how big the British Empire was when it was most powerful. The lands under British rule are marked, showing a huge global reach covering places like Africa, Asia, Australia, and the Americas. The map has detailed drawings of cultural symbols and people from different colonies, showing the Empire's mix of cultures and the goods it controled. In the middle, Britannia is shown as a strong and central figure, simbolising British power and influence. This document is clearly tied to the theme "Voyages, territoires, frontières" and the axis "Exploration et aventure" because it shows the British Empire's explorations and its controle of other lands. The map highlights how the colonies were connected to the main country by trade routes. It shows the excitement of adventure and discovery linked to imperial growth, but also the bad sides like the creation of borders and the domination of local peoples. I think this map is interesting and upsetting. On one hand, it show the dreams and plans of a connected world in the 19th century. But it also makes me think of the negative side of imperialism, like taking advantage of people and erasing cultures. The pictures seem to praise British power while ignoring the pain of the colonized peoples. It makes me think about how history can be shown in a one sided way, focusing on power and not the real cost for people.

Her pose and look show comfort and beauty, while the bright colors and detailed patterns bring out the mystery of the Orient. The painting is an example of Orientalism, a style that makes Middle Eastern and Asian cultures look romantic and perfect through a Western point of view. The painting fits the theme "Voyages, territoires, frontières" and the axis "Exploration et aventure" because it shows how 19th-century Europeans were fascinated by the "exotic" East. It represents how Europeans saw foreign lands as magical and exciting which inspired both cultural curiosity and colonial actions. The painting shows the mix of liking other cultures and forcing Europeans ideas into them, mixing the line between liking and taking over. I think this painting is very pretty but also makes me think. The colors and designs make it look like a dream, but it also makes me question how cultures are shown. While it shows the beauty of Eastern art, it also makes it simple and turns it into a fantasy for European people. This makes me think about how art can make us curious.

Title of the Document: The Victoria Memorial in Kolkata, India The Victoria Memorial was built to honor Queen Victoria. It is a big white marble building with beautiful gardens and statues. Designed by Sir William Emerson, it mixes British and Mughal styles, which shows how the British saw India as a mix of exotic and important. Inside the memorial, there are paintings and sculptures showing the time of British rule in India. These artworks often show India as a magical and exciting place, with scenes of Indian landscapes and British ceremonies. For the British people, this place was a simbol of power and adventure, making them dream about India. This building fits the theme “Voyages, territoires, frontières” and the axis “Exploration et aventure” because it shows the British ambition to leave a big memory in India. The memorial is a simbol of how they wanted to make India look rich and special to the rest of the world. I think the Victoria Memorial is beautiful but also a bit confusing. It’s an amazing peace of art, but it also shows how the British used art to show their power over India. It makes me think about how people sometimes romanticized other places while ignoring the real problems there. The mix of British and Indian styles is interesting because it shows how cultures can come together, even if one side is more powerful than the other. For me, this monument is like a book that tells two stories: one about beauty and one about control.

Title of the document: Alice in WonderlandAlice in Wonderland, published in 1865, tells the story of a young girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit hole and finds herself in a strange world full of weird creatures and adventures. The story is a fantasy novel written by Lewis Carroll. It's one of the most famous works of English literature, beloved by readers of all age.It is related with Alice in Wonderland, Alice trip represents an exploration of unknown places. As she travels through Wonderland, she encounter different characters and situations that challenge the normal rule of the real world. The novel explores the idea of crossing frontiers both physical, like traveling from one place to another, and mental, as Alice has to question her understanding of reality. It’s an adventure that pushes the frontiers between what is logical and what is imaginary.I really enjoyed watching Alice in Wonderland because of how fun and surprising the story is. The strange creatures and magical situations make you feel like you're on an adventure too. What really impressed me was Alice’s ability to question the world around her, even when everything seemed strange. It made me think about how we often follow rules without questioning them, and how sometimes breaking the rules or thinking differently can lead to new discoveries. It look like the vision the europeans had of India or america before, like extraordinary
"The Birth of Venus" by Sandro Botticelli This iconic painting depicts the goddess Venus emerging from the sea, symbolizing beauty, purity, and new beginnings. This connects to Jane Eyre's character as she undergoes a transformation throughout the novel. Just as Venus is reborn from the sea, Jane emerges stronger from her difficult experiences, finding her own path and identity. The painting represents Jane's inner growth and the empowerment she finds by staying true to herself.
Connection to Artworks:
"Lady with a Parasol" by Claude Monet This painting depicts a woman standing in a field, holding a parasol while the wind blows. It reflects the theme of freedom and independence, similar to Jane Eyre own journey. Jane seeks freedom from societal constraints and wants to live life on her own terms, much like the woman in the painting is standing confidently in an open space. The natural setting and the woman calm comportement show how Jane, too, finds strength in her autonomy and decisions.
Jane Eyre tells the story of a young orphan who grows up to become a strong, independent woman. The novel follows Jane’s struggles through childhood and adulthood, including her love for Mr. Rochester, a complex and mysterious man. Throughout the story, Jane fights for her self-respect and independence, refusing to settle for a life that diminishes her. She values equality in her relationships, especially in her love for Mr. Rochester. The book is powerful because it shows a woman who doesn’t accept being treated unfairly. Despite facing many challenges, Jane grow stronger, and she learns to stand up for herself. The Gothic setting, with the mysterious Thornfield Hall, adds an element of suspense, while Jane’s journey of self-discovery is at the heart of the novel.
