Objectives of the unit
This presentation will explain how to use the past simple in the English language. You will also learn how to form the past simple in the affirmative, negative and interrogative form.
WHEN DO WE USE THE PAST SIMPLE ?
We use this tense when we talk about: past habits states (feelings) finished actions

There are two types of verbs in the past simple. The easy peasy regular verbs and the horrible irregular verbs.
IRREGULAR VERBS
REGULAR VERBS
These are verbs in the infinitive form and all you do is add -ed played worked washed closed
These verbs don't follow any rules. You have to learn them by memory. SORRY!
Regular Verbs...
NEGATIVE
AFFIRMATIVE
All you have to do is add didn't + verb no change I didn't play You didn't play He / she / it didn't play We didn't play They didn't play
All you have to remember is to add -ed I played You played He / she / it played We played They played
Questions?????????
Short questions .... yes / no
For questions that answer yes or no. You have to add did before the pronoun. Aux verb + pronoun + verb + compliment (no change) Did you play football? Yes, I did. Did he play football? No, he didn't. Did we play football? Yes, we did. Did they play football? No, they didn't.
Information questions
For questions that need a long answer we need to add an information question wh- before did. Wh - + aux verb + pronoun + verb + comp (no change) What did you play yesterday? I played football. Where did he play yesterday? He played in Girona. When did we play yesterday? We played at nine o'clock. Who did they play with yesterday? They played with their friends.
Now answer the questions....
- Did you eat breakfast this morning?
- Did you have a shower yesterday?
- When did you start learning English?
