Wheat and grapes are depicted referring to the Eucharist. During the 17th century the Netherlands was primarily Catholic.
Rachel Ruysch's father was a very famouse scientist who specialized in botany, physics and anatomy. This influenced her intrests in depicting natural imagery with scientific influences.
This painting is a sub genre of Dutch still life know as Sotto Bosco. Instead of typical imagery it depicts animals and vegetation that makes the still life look like its a nature scene.
