Climate change

by Calabró Mariano, Benedetto Antonino & Giunta Alessandro

What is climate change?

Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. Such shifts can be natural, due to changes in the sun’s activity or large volcanic eruptions. But since the 1800s, human activities have been the main driver of climate change, primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas.

What are the causes of climate change?

The causes are:

  • Burning coal, oil and gas;
  • Deforestation;
  • Increasing livestock farming;
  • Fertilisers containing nitrogen;
  • Fluorinated gases.

Types of floods

There are 3 common types of floods:

- Flash floods are caused by rapid and excessive rainfall that raises water heights quickly, and rivers, streams, channels or roads may be overtaken;- River floods are caused when consistent rain or snow melt forces a river to exceed capacity; - Coastal floods are caused by storm surges associated with tropical cyclones and tsunami.
