How and Why to Set Personal Goals
This video looks at not only how to set goals, but also, importantly, why setting goals is an important and useful activity for you. Please watch this video with an open mind. Afterwards, we will look at setting some personal goals for ourselves.
Reach for the Stars
Activity 1:
In this activity, we will look at setting realistic goals, and consider how to stretch these goals.
- You will set a personal goal for your career, and put it on a sticky note.
- Then, you will create one more goal below it, to lead to your overall goal, and another goal above it, to stretch your goal even further.
Time to reflect...
- How difficult was it to create a personal goal from scratch? Why do you think it was difficult / easy for you?
- In what other areas of your life do you think goal setting would be a useful activity?
Planning your Roadmap
- Now that we have identified our goals, as well as a few iterations to help us get there, we can begin plotting our own roadmaps to success.
- This will help us visualise the path we want to take, as well as identifying any barriers, so that we can make contingency plans.
Creating your Roadmap to Success
Activity 2:
This activity follows from the last one, but this time, we will plot your personal goals on a map, and try to identify any barriers, as well as ways to overcome them.
- You will be returning to the goals you set in the previous activity, and mapping them out in a visual way.
- You will identify any potential barriers that might hinder your ability to reach your goals, and add these to the map.
- Then, in pairs, you will work together to add bridges or ladders to show how you can overcome these barriers.
Time to reflect...
- Did you find it easier to identify barriers than goals? How could having a Growth Mindset help with this?
- Why do you think that working in pairs is helpful, even though you are looking at your own personal goals?
Taking First Steps
Today, we have:
- Identified our goals
- Set targets
- Created a roadmap
- Identified barriers
Steps to Success
Activity 3:
In this activity, we'll split back into pairs, and look at steps that you can take towards your goals, in the next 24 hours!
- You will need to split back into your pairs, and revisit each other's goals and roadmap.
- Together, you will look at steps that you can take towards your goals in the next 24 hours!
- You will commit to taking these steps, and to be your partner's accountability champion.
Time to reflect...
- What is one thing you learned today that you didn’t know before?
- How can you use this information to make informed decisions about yourself and in your life?
