AP Language & Compositon

According to the AP English and Language Composition Course and Exam Description, "The AP English Language and Composition course focuses on the development and revision of evidence-based analytic and argumentative writing, the rhetorical analysis of nonfiction texts, and the decisions writers make as they compose and revise. Students evaluate, synthesize, and cite research to support their arguments. Additionally, they read and analyze rhetorical elements and their effects in nonfiction texts—including images as forms of text— from a range of disciplines and historical periods" (2024, pg.14).

Are Gifted Students Coming to AP Language and Composition Prepared?

UnPrepared

Prepared

Reflective

Some of my gifted students are not prepared for AP Language and Composition because they were not aware that the class was reading mostly nonfiction texts and nonfiction writing. They are used to their Langauge Arts classess focusing heavily on fiction and narrative writing. They also are not prepared to have open discussions to anlayze multiple sources.

My gifted students meet the GA expectations and Davidson's analysis by being challenged, being creative, collaborating with others, analyzing different topics, forming unique opinions based on evidence and discussions, sharing and discussing ideas, and having times for enrichment.

Many of my gifted students are coming to AP Language and Composition prepared for the rigor & expectations, but I do have some gifted students who are not prepared due to the work load and expectations.
