Moral Developement

What is morality to you? Is it subjective?

01

Morality in Human Nature

Morality in Human Nature

Conclusion is: evolution must have made similar biologically engrained morals for humans too.

Moral behaviors and emotions have roots in our evolutionary history. Non - human examples: Ants, bees, and termites show extreme self-sacrifice. (stinging to protect the hive, even if it kills them) Chimpanzees(genetically closest to humans): chimps reciprocate favors for chimps by grooming and sharing food with others that have helped them. After a physical fight, chimps may hold hands and groom eachother, and engage in friendly behaviors, to rekindle relationships

It's human nature...

Most species show empathy and morals to family groups, sharing common reproductive interests. Humans too! We are biased to aid family members, particularly in life or death situations, (volunteering for a kidney transplant, or running into a burning building to save a family member) BUT, humans also have the highest capacity to make sacrifices for non-relatives, like investing time in helping the needy, donating to charity, and giving their lives in military service.

+ info

Why do you think humans are more likely than other species to sacrifice for non-relatives?

As we've covered in previous chapters, infants have prewired empathy within them. New borns cry when they hear another newborn cry. They prefer individuals who help another rather than hurt another in experiments.

The prefrontal cortex is responsible for responding to others emotional suffering, and grows as we grow.

Can babies tell right from wrong?

In this video, an infant is being tested on choosing a character. One of the characters helps another, and one of the characters hurts another.

Morality As Adoption of social norms

Social learning theory

Modeling- observing and imitating adults who demonstrate appropriate behavior.t

Does not regard morality as a special human activity with unique course of development. Instead, moral behavior is acquired through reinforcement and modeling.

Role models are most influential on children's morality at a very early age.t

Psychoanalytic Theory and the Role of Guilt

Freud's controversial theory of guilt forming moral actions. He believed that moral formation was basically complete at around age 5 or 6, and that a child feels a large amount of guilt when he betrays his superego (the angel on the shoulder)therefore leading to avoiding immoral actions.

Limitations to "morality as an adoption of social norms"

Theories that regard morality as solely internalizing social norms, are limited because deliberate violation of social norms would mean immoral behavior. Ex: Abraham Lincoln's opposition to slavery, MLK Jr's campaign against racial prejudice.

What are other limitations of viewing morality as soley a construct of society?
