Character analysis

Character analysis is the process of asking questions about who your character is to help you define your character. Often, a character’s personality helps a designer decide what the character will look like, how they will be modeled, how they move, and how they need to be rigged. The more you understand your character, the more believable your character will be.

Character design

As you begin developing your design, remember that the simpler the design, the simpler the process will be. Character designers rarely jump straight into the modeling software to create their characters. They will often develop several sketches of their characters on paper based on the source of reference.

model sheets revisited

Remember that a model sheet is a reference document in animation that includes multiple views of a character (front, side, back, three-quarter) to ensure consistency in their design and proportions throughout the production.

Importing model sheets

Check out this video about importing model sheets into Blender. Once they are imported, the teacher will show you how you can begin building rough characters from simple shapes.

Biomechanical Movement

For a 3D model animation, all the natural movements of humans must be kept in mind. The model is created to ensure the character does not look too mechanical or robotic. The term used to refer to making a 3D model’s movements more human-like is biomechanical. Biomechanical movements are created by ensuring a connection between the planned movement and the body parts. The right points of your model's skin should be animated to move akin to natural human movements, allowing muscles, skin, bone structure, and other details to influence the animation.
