Group 1
Written Comprehension - "Swamped"
There had even been attempts to prevent the Windrush from leaving Jamaica […]. When it became clear that the government was unable to prevent the Empire Windrush from docking, or to prevent the migrants from coming ashore, they changed their strategy. The Windrush migrants were to be dispersed across the country and they were warehoused in an old deep-level air-raid shelter near Clapham South underground station […]. While the government certainly did not welcome their arrival, British industry evidently did. Within a month the government had found work for all but twelve. The rest were hard at work in undermanned and essential industries across the country, from Scotland to Gloucester. […]
Written Comprehension - "Swamped"
On the day the Empire Windrush reached Tilbury, eleven labour MPs sent a letter to Attlee requesting that he put in place controls to limit black immigration to Britain. […] During the summer of 1948, as the Empire Windrush was crossing the Atlantic, the British Nationality Act was in the latter stages of becoming law. […] The act gave the people of the empire the new status of Commonwealth Citizen. This gave them the right to enter and settle in Britain, which was seen as the necessary continuation of a long British tradition of open borders, which was deemed fitting for a nation at the centre of a vast (if rapidly collapsing) empire.

Oral Comprehension Notting Hill
What is it?
What have we learnt so far?
Describe the image and guess what kind of event this could be!
Oral comprehension - Notting Hill
Questions - Notting Hill Carnival
1) Who is speaking? (Name, her occupation/job, link to the Notting Hill Carnival) 2) What is she talking about? (Main subject, the ideas she expresses) 3) Where did the events take place? (Where is the Carnival, what is the location - country, city + where are the persons from - their origins) 4) When did the events take place? (When did it start, when does it happen now) 5) Why is she speaking about this subject? (her link to Notting Hill and the carnival + why does the carnival exist)
Correction Notting Hill Carnival
1) The woman who is speaking is Allyson Williams, her husband and her are the founders of the band ‘Genesis’, which has been playing at the Notting Hill Carnival since the beginning of the Carnival. 2) The main subject of the video is the Notting Hill Carnival, but more precisely how it started (with the Windrush generation and the murder of Kelso Cochrane by a gang of white racists). Allyson explains how the journalist Claudia Jones wanted to bring joy after this trauma and expresses how this legacy is important for Black and British citizens.
Correction Notting Hill Carnival
3) The Notting Hill Carnival takes place in London, in the Notting Hill neighbourhood, in England. Kelso Cochrane, the man who was murdered by racists, was from Antigua and Barbuda. Claudia Jones, the woman who invented the Notting Hill Carnival was Trinidadian, as well as Allyson Williams. The musicians and singers who participate in the Notting Hill Carnival are of Caribbean origins and the ones who started the Carnival were from the Windrush generation.
Correction Notting Hill Carnival
4) All the events that Allyson is talking about took place in Notting Hill. 5) She is speaking about this subject because the Notting Hill Carnival is very important for the Black and British community, it is a symbol of joy, happiness and coming together in hard times. When the racist murder of Kelso Cochrane occurred, Claudia Jones found a way to bring the community together and a sense of home with the Carnival, which is a cultural celebration of the Caribbean people.

Oral Comprehension India's Independence
What is it?
What do you know about India?
Describe these pictures and guess which event they illustrate.
Why was India split into two countries?Oral Comprehension
Questions
1) What is the main subject of the video? And what were the consequences? 2) When did it happen? 3) Why did it happen? 4) How did it happen?
Correction
1) The main subject of the video is India's independence and how the British split the country into two, which caused millions of deaths. 2) India gained its independence from the British in August 1947, after 200 years of British rule. 3) Britain gave independence to India because it was weakened by the Second World War and there were a lot of anti-colonial movements at the beginning of the 20th century. Because the British started to categorise the citizens of India by their religious identities, tensions started to grow. 4) Britain's organisation of India's independence was chaotic. Because they had divided people so much, they decided to draw new borders and created Pakistan for Muslims and India for Hindus. Hence, Hindus started to move to India and Muslims to Pakistan but there was no map, the latter was revealed two days later.
