At the end of the 18th century, the beginnings of the industrial revolution began, which shifted the artisanal society to a commercial and individual society. This change would lead to a new literary movement that we are currently studying: British Romanticism, which would involve a revolt on social and political norms against the aristocrats of the Enlightenment, as well as a reaction against the scientific rationalization of nature. Neoclassicism was a movement that implied an idealized form. People were perfected not as they necessarily were, but rather as an idealized version. Romanticism hated this idea.
The expression "english romanticism" was born in the Great-Bretagne in the end of the XVIII century. It appears between the 1800th and the 1850th after the classicism
Romanticism opposes classicism and, while inheriting the Enlightenment, rejects its rationalism.
The caracteristics of this literary mouvement is that we should stop talking about the society, we have to be spontaneous, have a lack of rules, to put first the imagination instead of the reason and the beauty standards, talking about love and the cult of the nature.
Conclusion, Romanticism is a way to free oneself from the norms of neoclassicism. We put aside idealization, perfection, to replace it with something irrational, something new that helps us imagine a world where everything is possible. Despite the fact that it will be replaced by the Victorian movement, which is characterized by a rather realistic world and the description of everyday life, Romanticism will be the factor of several fantastic works such as Frankenshtein, which will always be present in today's life due to its popularity.
