Some verbs can be written alone after the subject of the sentence, such as 'I breathe', if you notice, the phrase only has a subject and a verb. But... What do you think? In English there are different patterns of words that can follow after the verb.
Verb + to + infinitive
The infinitive is the base form of the verb, in some cases the infinitive goes with 'to' and in some other cases without it.
Examples:
- Agree They agreed to go on holiday together
- Appear The exam appeared to be very easy to answer
- Bother She didn’t bother to take the trash out
- Decide We decided to buy a new house
- Demand I demand to speak to the manager
- Fail They failed to keep on singing
This pattern consists of two consecutive verbs in the infinitive, that is, their present form.
Verb + somebody/something + to + infinitive
I ask the teacher an interesting question
Verb + gerund
They celebrated passing the final exams
Verb + gerund or infinitive
I like drinking coffee/I like to drink coffee
Modal verb + infinitive without to
I might show up later at the party
