RESPONDING TO SS COMMENTS
Responding to ss writing is part of the PROCESS of teaching writing
The teacher as READER and EDITOR can intervene at various points in the process in order to create an interaction between the writer and the reader.
PRINCIPLES FOR ALL TYPES OF RESPONSES
- Read the whole piece befor you write anything
- Let ss know about their strengths
- Make sure ss are familar with editing symbols if you use them
- Decide the type of errors you will correct, or you are just indicating when they occur.
- Ask yourself: What should the writer do improve this paper?
USELESS TIME!!!!
WRITTEN COMMENTS
1. Write a supportive message
2. You can use questions to direct ss to identify unclear content or to lack of details
TALKING ABOUT THE PAPER
To revise a paper you can have face to face conferences, so that a real discussion can take place.
2. To let the ss read outloud what he wrote so that he can spot out errors.
1. When we come across an obscure passage and it is impossible to understand what the ss wants to say.
3. Make notes while the student is explaining so that he can identify strengths as well as weaknesses

CHECKLISTS
Checklists can include questions about the writing piece.
They can be used by both, the teacher and the students.
It can be short and be used first by the student to check and then by the teacher to evaluate. (main idea, supporting ideas, verbs tenses)
Don't forget they are used to note success of items taught in class, do not give negative marks. Number of plus marks will grow week by week
STUDENTS' RESPONSES TO STUDENT WRITING
Checklists provide guidelines for students to read and assess each other
In groups of 4 or 5 each student reads his composition aloud (encouraging self correction)
In groups of 3 or 4 students, they exchange drafts. Each student makes an outline (main ideas, support ideas) They compare outlines and share perceptions.
Create an exhibition of compositions so that whole class can analyze it. (what is good?, what is the writer's point?, what ideas support the writer's point of view? )
SELF EDITING
As a teacher, one of your tasks is to have ss develop the ability to read and evaluate their own writing.
When writing a draft they should focus on generating ideas (no grammar, no spelling here) if they don't know a word, Spanish is ok
Have ss put the draft aside for a day, read the draft for themselves so that they can catch errors, teachers make their own observations
Students proofread, at this point the use of a dictionary is necessary
Students use checklists and make outlines of their compositions to get the final version
WAYS OF DEALING WITH ERRORS
Don't try to mark all errors, decide which ones to deal with.
Try to determine the cause of the error.
Look for what the student has done correctly.
Students use checklists and make outlines of their compositions to get the final version
Establish a correction code and treat errors with seriousness.
