By Fata Mulaomerovic MED TERM II

START

What is MRSA?

Virus or Bacteria?

MRSA (Methicilin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus) is a type of staph bacteria. It is a staph germ that is resistant to many different types of antibiotics.

Potential Diseases

What are potential diseases that MRSA can cause?
  • MRSA can cause many invasive infections that could have the potential to be deadly. In most cases the infections are on the skin or in subcutaneous tissue but in other cases it can cause diseases and some of those diseases include...
  • Osteomyelitis
  • Meningitis
  • Pneumonia

Next

Where it came from...

Where and when was it first identified?

The first identification of the MRSA bacteria was in England by professor Margaret Patricia Jevons

1960

The first official outbreak of the MRSA bacteria was in the Boston Hospital.

Signs and Symptoms

MRSA infections most commonly happen on skin. When infected with MRSA on the skin symptoms may include....

Pus

Painful Blisters

Red Swollen Bumps on Skin

Wounds

Rashes

Next

Infections beyond Skin

Other organs MRSA may infect..

The Lungs

The Heart

The Bones

Example: Osteomyelitis

Example: Pneumonia

Example: Endocarditis

Who's at Risk?

What individuals more at risk?

Individuals who are most at risk for MRSA include..-Healthcare Workers -Hospital Patients -People with compromised Immune Sys. -People who share items -People who do drugs

Why?

People that fit under those categories are more susceptible to getting MRSA because of the constant exposure to other people and many can come into contact with surfaces that may be contaminated with MRSA.

Ways it can be transmitted..

MRSA can be transmitted in many ways some of which include..

Direct Contact with people/patients infected

By Touching a person that is infected with the virus.

By touching a contaminated surface such as a door knob

Indirect contact

Lorem ipsum dolor

If person is infected with pneumonia if they cough the droplets can get into your mouth and nose.

Droplets

Body fluids that can contain MRSA are urine, sputum, blood, wound drainage, and in bowel movements

Diagnosis and Treatment

How do you diagnose and Treat MRSA?

Diagnosis

Treatment

MRSA can be diagnosed in different ways. The most common include collecting a sample and testing it in a lab. Most samples can come from the site of infection, the nose, blood, and urine. In the lab they can put the sample on a dish and try to encourage bacteria growth.

MRSA is hard to treat with many antibiotics considering that it is Methicilin resistant. However there are some like Vancomycin and Doxycyline. There are other ways to treat and help MRSA such as draining infected areas.
