🛠️Knowledge Building
Research has shown that students who received instruction on a topic using text sets demonstrated more knowledge of the concepts. Text sets offer more comprehensive coverage of a topic than a single text, providing students with a deeper knowledge base.
📚Vocabulary Development
Reading multiple texts on the same topic exposes students to domain-specific vocabulary in different contexts, enabling them to retain more vocabulary.
⚙️Critical Thinking
Reading to learn across multiple texts can help students make inferences and connections between texts. Students build critical thinking skills by synthesizing what they’ve learned from a text set and drawing conclusions.
✨Engagement
Using a mix of text formats and genres can keep students engaged, making them more likely to retain the information they read. Students who are more motivated to read ultimately have better learning outcomes.
👩🏽🤝👩🏼Different Perspectives
By receiving multiple viewpoints and interpretations of the same topic, students better understand the world around them.
Tips for Success
- Tip 1: It can be helpful to establish a “Big Question” that gives students a clear purpose for reading the text set. For example, if students are studying the weather, your “Big Question” may be “How do people solve weather-related issues?” By making sure each text in the set helps to answer this question, you can build a more cohesive text set for your students.
- Tip 2: At this point, you may also want to identify two or three “hooks”—short videos, photographs, illustrations, maps, etc.—that can be used to spark students’ interest in the topic.
- Tip 3: Include a wide variety of multimedia: Explore Boards should include a wide variety of multimedia, such as videos, audio, and images. The important thing is to provide learners with the resources they need to build a stronger conceptual understanding of the topic they are about to study.

Multimedia Text Sets
A multimedia text set, sometimes called an Explore Board, is a collection of books, articles, videos, and images related to a topic of study. Text sets allow students to explore a common theme or subject as they build background knowledge and develop vocabulary related to the topic. A text set could include fiction and nonfiction books, speeches, poems, videos, web resources, news articles, podcasts, and images. Its intent is to hook the student to the content and spark curiosity in the topic/idea explored. When students build background knowledge they can conecct to the content.
