Taliban control

Taliban were welcomed into communities and cities in Afghanistan, as they seemed to bring stability and order which the country had been deprived of for many years.

Soviet withdrawal

After a strong fight from the Mujahideen, the Soviet Union decided to pull out of Afghanistan. Internal and international pressure forced former Soviet Union leader Mikhail Gorbachev to end the war and leave Afghanistan.

Beginning of the Taliban

After the Soviet Union withdrew from Afghanistan, the Taliban, a new militia group, formed. The Taliban was primarily made up of former Mujahideen members and soldiers who had studied at conservative Islamic schools around the region.

U.S. pulls out troops

Former U.S. President Joe Biden announced that U.S. troops would return home, leaving the Afghanistan military alone to defend against the Taliban.

Taliban regain power

Although the Afghanistan military received 80 billion dollars in funding along with training from the U.S., the Taliban was able to break through the Afghan defense in many areas. They eventually surrounded Kabul and regained power Aug. 15, 2021
