What is Philosophical chairs?

Philosophical Chairs is an inquiry-based strategy that is built on a prompt and to which contradictory positions exist; participants address these positions through deep, academic discourse in a structured, formal process.

Philosophical chairs

  • Deepens relational capacity by appreciating the diverse nature of the class and world.
  • Incorporates many WICOR components.
  • Can be used with all grade levels, content areas, levels of complexity, and self-direction.
  • Philosophical Chairs differs from Socratic Seminar in that it is not dependent on a text, but reading some text before engaging in the activity can only enhance the process.
  • Philosophical Chairs focuses on a point/counterpoint.

4 corners

4 Corner activity is a collaborative teaching strategy designed to engage students in discussion and critical thinking.

  • Setup: Four corners of the classroom are designated for different responses or viewpoints related to a specific statement or question.
  • Prompt: The teacher poses a question or statement that has multiple perspectives. This could be a controversial topic, a literary theme, or any subject matter that invites discussion.
  • Movement:Students move to the corner that represents their opinion or response. Each corner corresponds to a different choice (e.g., "Agree," "Disagree," "Strongly Agree," "Strongly Disagree").
  • Share: Once in their corners, students discuss their reasoning with their peers. This encourages them to articulate their thoughts and listen to others’ perspectives.

Collaborative Study groups

In Collaborative Study Groups (CSGs), students identify a specific question from a content area, collaborate to develop and deepen their understanding through Socratic inquiry, and apply their new learning in order to enhance classroom performance.

Collaborative study groups

  • Grouping: Students are organized into small, diverse groups (typically 4-6 members) to promote collaboration and peer support.
  • Focus on a Task: Each group is given a specific academic task, question, or problem to work on. This could be related to a subject area like math, science, or literature.
  • Role Assignments: Each member may have specific roles (e.g., facilitator, recorder, reporter, timekeeper) to ensure participation and accountability. Roles can rotate to give everyone a chance to contribute in different ways.
  • Collaboration: Students work together to discuss, analyze, and solve the task. They share their thoughts, question each other, and build on one another's ideas.
