Aztecs

The Mayas are an indigenous people of Mexico and Central America that has continuously inhabited the lands that comprise the current Yucatan, Quintana Roo, Campeche, Tabasco and Chiapas in Mexico, and to the south the territories of Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador and Honduras.

The Aztecs were the Native American people who dominated northern, central and southern Mexico at the time of the Spanish conquest in the early 16th century. A nomadic culture, the Aztecs eventually settled on several small islands in Lake Texcoco where, in 1325, they founded the town of Tenochtitlan, modern-day Mexico City.
