Ski boot "LA DOLOMITE" [1967]
Inv. 982
Upper made of padded leather with a leather rear reinforcement. Rubber insert in the heel area with the Italian tricolor. Closure with five spring metal buckles. Sole made with stitched and glued leather layers, and Vibram Cristallo tread [->] screwed in place.
The ski boot produced by the company 'La Dolomite' in 1967 perfectly represents the type of products for skiing developed locally before the introduction of plastic materials for the moulding of the shells (the rigid outer shell of modern ski boots). It is characterized by a wrap-around design with five closure points using metal buckle hooks, enhanced by the presence of a spring to improve fit. This type of mechanism was also present in the '4S' model produced in the same year by “La Dolomite”, for which the company was awarded, for the second time, the Compasso d'Oro (the world’s most prestigious design award, previously won for another ski boot in 1957). The model on display features, in addition to the company’s logo on the ankle area, the tricolor to emphasize its Italian craftsmanship. Interestingly to note how, as early as the 1940s, the company stamped the phrase 'Hand made in Italy' [->] on the soles of some footwear, therefore possibly intended for the foreign market.

Snow boot Moon Boot [early 1990s]
Inv. 1781
Upper made of 100% water-repellent nylon, heel and finishes in PVC. Lining made of 100% polyester foam. Rubber sole with non-slip tread.
Traditionally, the après-ski boot [->] was an elegant product in design and craftsmanship, made from leather, with or without fur, and by the 1960s had become an essential part of the snow attire worn by major film stars at the most renowned ski resorts. This was the scenario until the revolutionary product created by Giancarlo Zanatta, who, inspired by the design of the boots worn by astronauts on the moon [->] on July 21, 1969, developed a highly innovative product that approached the fashion world but with technical characteristics specific for snow. Numerous synthetic materials, padding methods, and production processes were tested for this new après-ski boot, and the first prototypes were made in red and blue. It was an immediate success. Tecnica, the manufacturing company, went on to sell more than a million pairs per year. In 2000, the Moon Boot was exhibited at the Louvre and was listed among the one hundred most significant items in the fashion history of the 20th century; more recently, given its relevance, it became part of the permanent collection at MoMA in New York.

Ski boot "NORDICA", Dobermann 5 RD model, signed by the italian champion dominik paris [2024]
Inv. FSS.M.PRO.0206
Shell and cuff made of PU with Alpine DIN 5355 insole and Micro ALU Scr buckles. Bi-injected spine with Tri-Force construction. Spoiler with dual configuration and customizable low or high wedge. Dobermann 5 Race laced liner and Dynamic Strap closure system with high-strength elastic Velcro. ISO Standard 5355 sole with 3/4/5 mm lift options.
Nordica began designing the first Dobermann model [->] back in 1999 to meet the needs of the multi-medaled Olympic Norwegian champion Kjetil Andre Aamodt. At that time, Nordica created a mono-injected boot with a refined and timeless look that immediately stands out from all other products on the market. It is launched for the 2000-01 season and remains a flagship model until the Dobermann Aggressor of 2005-06. This is subsequently revised in 2010-11 in the Dobermann EDT model and in 2015-16 with the fourth edition named Dobermann TNG.

The fifth edition for 2023-24 introduces significant innovations, starting with the quest for a highly anatomical shell shape and an adjusted contour with the intent of reducing the volume and make the boot responsive in direction changes, thanks to the simultaneous transfer of impulses enabled by its construction. The new model also allows customization of the internal wedge. The liner [->] has also been redesigned: it features a thinner upper, enhancing the overall sensitivity of the boot, along with the application of the Heel Link, a patented system consisting of an elastic fabric strap that tightens proportionally to ensure proper heel positioning within the designated area.

ROCK and EARTH

Mountain boot, unknown manufacturer [early 20th century]
Inv. 365
Upper made of leather with leather reinforcements and a fabric collar. Sole made of multiple layers of hand-stitched leather with through metal studs.
Early 20th-century mountain boots were traditionally robust products made from leather and hide, designed to support both daily life and vacationing in the mountains. These ankle-high boots provide protection and support for the foot, with reinforced areas at the heel and toe, the most likely worn parts. The sole is crafted by stitching together layers of leather, with the heel added by nailing it onto the sole. A system of hammered metal nails is applied to the sole, aiding traction on all types of terrain and minimizing wear. In the exhibited footwear, it is evident that, in the central area of the sole without nails, the sole has worn down and been repaired by applying a leather patch secured with small nails. This was a common practice to extend the use of shoes. In the same way, often, shoes were crudely assembled from parts of previously used and discarded footwear.

The boot includes a removable liner [->] made of multiple layers that ensures maximum warmth within a compact volume, and, with its insulated and durable sole, allows walking in tents or at base camp. The 8000 external gaiter is crafted from S-TECH Schoeller, an eco-friendly, Bluesign™-certified material free of PFCs, offering complete waterproofing with the YKK® zipper and heat-sealed reflective tape. It uses PrimaLoft fabric, whose construction allows excess heat and moisture to escape. The Vibram sole is composed of a compact polyurethane outer layer for excellent grip on rough terrain, featuring a lug design that allows mud to be automatically shed, and an inner PU layer that cushions impacts, reducing stress on knees, ankles, and hips. The Vibram MONT compound provides maximum reliability on difficult terrain at low temperatures. Its hardness is a key factor in crampon compatibility [->] for use on snowy and icy terrain.

Fast hiking, also known as speed hiking, is a newly established discipline that combines elements of mountaineering and hiking with mountain running. The underlying idea stems from the long-standing tradition of mountaineering, where climbers and hikers have always aimed to reach summits as quickly as possible. Only in recent years, however, has fast hiking been recognized as an independent discipline. Speed hiking, similar to trail running, differs in its emphasis on self-sufficiency during activity, its longer duration, a slower pace than running, and often on more rugged and remote terrain. The development of footwear that meets the performance, comfort, and protection needs of practitioners has made this discipline possible. Speed hiking shoes must combine lightness, flexibility, breathability, and durability with traction, responsiveness, support, and a secure fit.
