Chapter 1: the vanishing of Will Byers
On the evening of November 6, 1983, in a secret laboratory, a scientist tries to escape from a mysterious creature. In the nearby town of Hawkins, four kids named Mike, Will, Lucas, and Dustin are finishing playing Dungeons & Dragons at Mike's house. After playing, Will, Lucas and Dustin return to their home on their bikes. Along the way, Will sees a strange being that begins to chase him, so he runs through the woods to his house; After trying to call someone, he is reached by the creature who makes him suddenly disappear into thin air. Will's mother, Joyce, meanwhile, is worried about her son's disappearance and reports his disappearance to the police, who set out to search for the boy following his last traces. That same evening, Will's mother receives a phone call in which she hears her son sobbing and other indistinct and unusual sounds. The man who hosted Eleven is reached by some agents of the laboratory, who kill him by shooting him and then try to capture the child. Eleven manages to escape and runs into Mike, Lucas and Dustin, who are also looking for Will.

Set in the eighties in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, and partly in the world of the "Upside Down", the beginning of the series centers on the mysterious disappearance of a child named Will and the appearance of Eleven, a shaved hair girl with telekinetic powers who escaped from a secret laboratory, the Hawkins National Laboratory.
She is the loving and courageous mother of the missing twelve-year-old Will Byers and his older brother Jonathan, with whom she lives separately after divorcing her husband Lonnie. Born in 1943, she is a former partner and contemporary of Hopper.
Joyce Byers
1971, as well as Nancy's younger brother and Holly's older brother; he is an intelligent and courageous kid who often acts as the "leader" of the group, starting from the D&D games in which he often plays the role of Master. He is in love with Eleven whom he hosted at his home and with whom he will embark on a relationship in the third season. (spoiler)
Michael "Mike" Wheeler
He is the chief of police in Hawkins. He separated from his wife after the death of his daughter Sarah from cancer, an event that also caused him problems with alcoholism. Grumpy but faithful to justice, he shows a cynical spirit, but honest and ready to sacrifice.
James "Jim" Hopper
Called by the diminutive "El" (in English El, diminutive of Eleven) she is the mysterious girl met by Mike, Dustin and Lucas. They assign her this name for the number on the child's arm (011). She is endowed with telekinetic powers and has shaved hair but then it will grow back.
Another close friend of Mike, Dustin and Will, he is a brave and enterprising boy. He often keeps a cool head and guides the group's decisions thanks to his firm morals. In the third season she embarks on a relationship with Max and although she will leave him between the third and fourth due to the loss of Billy they will still remain in love.
Eleven / Jane Hopper
Lucas Sinclair
One of Mike's best friends, Will and Lucas, he is a nice and shrewd boy, the real glue of the group, like the other boys passionate about science and the fantasy genre. He suffers from cleidocranial dysostosis which causes him sigmatism.
