Surgery is typically the first step in treatment pathways. The aim of breast cancer surgery is to remove the existing cancer, and there are two main types of surgery: 1. Mastectomy: complete removal of breast tissue; usually reserved for advanced-stage cancers 2. Breast-conserving Surgery (partial mastectomy/lumpectomy): removal of only the cancerous tissue and a small margin around it
