AN INTERACTIVE GUIDE TO THE WILLY STREET CO-OP ON WILLIAMSON STREET

If a shopper enters the larger of the two entrances via the atrium, they will find themselves in front of customer service, with the produce section to their immediate left. This sign, which can be found on the wall immediately to the left of this entrance, is updated weekly and tells shoppers how many of the produce items are local, and the percentage of the produce items that are organic. Both local and organic items are key features of co-ops.

Near the checkout stations, shoppers have the opportunity to purchase a number of Willy Street Co-op merchandise items. Items available for purchase include:

  • T-shirts
  • Beanie
  • Trucker hat
  • Stickers
  • Tote bags
  • Bandana
  • Patches
  • Pins

In the back left corner of the store, in the dairy section, there is a counter for cheese. Shoppers can visit the counter to choose from a surplus of cheese types, some of which are local. The cheese section, as seen in the photo, is also one of the market's many locations to purchase wine. An employee is often available to assist customers in this section.

In the furthest right aisle of the co-op, shoppers will find kitchen appliances amongst other common household items.

To enter the co-op, shoppers will have to pass through an atrium. This photo was taken inside the atrium, before entering the market. Before they even enter the store, shoppers will have the opportunity to purchase sale items. The sign above the items reads "Co-op deals: Sales for Everyone!", inidicating all shoppers, not just members, can take part in this sale.

This is a station in the store in which shoppers can purchase Premium Fresh Water in bulk. They will be charged by the gallon, at a rate of 49 cents per gallon.

Located in the baking supplies aisle, Madame Chu is a local producer who supplies the co-op with specialty sauces, which are very popular amongst customers.

The co-op offers a large selection of meat. There is a cooler with frozen meat products that individuals can purchase, and there is a counter where an employee can cut and serve speciality meat productss to customers.

The market contains a wellness section. This section includes supplements, vitamins, shower supplies, essential oils, herbs and other wellness related items. Pictured here is a shelf full of soaps.

At this station, shoppers can purchase prepared hot food to take on the go. Options include items like mac and cheese, pasta and lasagna. The food can purchased and taken home or eaten at the commons at the front of the store. This station saves customers the stress of cooking.

These are photos of two kinds of labels shoppers will see in the produce department. These labels help customers know if a produce item is locally grown as seen with the purple label on the left photo and the locations on both photos. They also share information about if a product is certifed organic, as seen with the green label on the right photo.

If standing in the co-op's bulk aisle, when facing the back of the store, on the left will be coffee, spreads and spices available for bulk purchase. Customers can take as much as they please, paying by the pound.

These are photos of two kinds of labels shoppers will see throughout the store regarding sales. These labels not only indicate that an item is on sale, but detail who is eleigible to receive the discounted price. As co-ops are member-owned, members will recieve exclusive discounts, as seen in the photo on the left. However, there are sales for everyone too, not just members, as seen in the right image.

The commons provide customers with a location to sit down and eat the food they have just purchased, socialize or get some work done. There is additional seating outside the market with tables and chairs.

Pictured above is the label for a beer in the market's liquor section. As the co-op does with its products, not just produce items, it is marked as a local item. The purple "L" next to the QR-Code indicates the product comes from a local producer. In this case, the product is Spotted Cow, which is a beer brewed exclusively in Wisconsin at the New Glarus Brewing Company in New Glarus, Wisconsin.

Across from the cheese section, shoppers will find shelves and fridges full of liquor. Shoppers may also find alcoholic beverages scattered throughout the store, but this section is where the majority of liquor is sold. The stock consists of primarily wines and beers, with many options from local producers or breweries.

Within the produce section, various signs hang above the market's products. These signs allow shoppers to see a photo and get a little information regarding the farmers who help supply the produce section. Pictured here is what these signs look like.

A unique feature of the co-op found in the bulk aisle is the Kombucha on tap station. Customers can purchase kombucha by the pound at a rate of $3.29 per pound.

This is a picture of the produce section of the Willy Street Co-op. Produce is often a big seller at co-ops because inidviduals are drawn to the selection of both locally produced and organic items. Co-ops take pride in working with community members to stock their produce sections, as well as acquiring products that are USDA certified organic.

The co-op offers a unique selection of seafood in the back of the store. Shoppers are able to choose from a handful of options including, catfish, cod, salmon and more.

In addition to food items, the co-op offers the opportunities to purchase basic clothing necessities. At this location, shoppers can purchase socks underwear and sunglasses. Cold weather items such as hats and gloves are available for purchase near the bathrooms.
