Apprentice Task Narrative Apprentice: Ryan Britland Task title Bending 1” pipe Task Overview I got given a 1” drawing that had 1 bent pipeline in it. This gave me chance to use the bending machine and to learn different ways to mark it out. I followed safety precautions whilst doing this task. The tools I used for this was a tape measure, engineers square, bending machine and a spirit level. Description of Task Firstly, I collected my drawing from the office and scanned through it, so I knew what I had to do. I then went and collected my bit of pipe which was 1350mm long and brought the bending machine over to my bay. I got my grinder with a flapping disc and applied a 37.5* prep to both ends and then cleaned up the outside and inside with an internal grinder. I then had a look to see what the measurements where for where I had to bend the pipe. The first bend was at 530mm so I marked that on my pipe with my tape measure and a piece of chalk. I then had to take off the nominal bore which was 25mm and marked it, I then rubbed off my old line as now I have the mark where I bend the pipe at. I then set the bending machine up to the correct size pipe. I then placed my pipe in the bending machine and putting the line I had marked on the centre of the bending machine. I then started to bend the pipe to somewhere near 90*. Once I got close, I took the pipe out and checked it with my square, if it needed a bit more I would of put it back in the bending machine but it was okay so I didn’t have to. Once that was done, I double checked my measurement to make sure it was okay and it was. Health and Safety For health and safety, I made sure I was wearing the correct PPE which was my overalls, boots, gloves and safety glasses. I then done a pre-hazard check list and a risk assessment before I started to do any work. I also made sure my bay was tidy and that there was no tripping hazards. Key Learning They key learning in this task was knowing what measurements to take off. Whenever you are doing more than one bend you have to take off the nominal bore of the pipe and bend it at that, so when the bend is done you have the correct measurement. This brought my confidence back as I haven’t done much bending so getting it correct first time made me more confident to do more.

Unit Overview:IPS05 focuses on advanced skills and knowledge required for specialized pipework systems. The unit includes competencies such as working with specialized materials, advanced fabrication techniques, system integration, detailed testing and validation, and adherence to specialized industry standards. Assessment Methods: Observation: Direct observation of practical tasks. Questioning: Oral and written questions to assess theoretical understanding. Work Product: Review of completed work and related documentation. Witness Testimony: Testimonies from supervisors or colleagues. Self-Assessment: Learner’s reflection on their own performance. Assessment Criteria: Working with Specialized Materials: Demonstration of techniques for handling and working with specialized pipe materials (e.g., stainless steel, high-pressure pipes). Understanding of the properties and applications of these materials. Advanced Fabrication Techniques: Proficiency in advanced fabrication techniques (e.g., precision cutting, complex welding, custom fittings). Ensuring high-quality fabrication standards. System Integration: Competence in integrating pipe systems with other mechanical and electrical systems. Understanding the requirements for seamless integration and interoperability.

Detailed Testing and Validation: Conducting detailed and rigorous testing procedures. Validating system performance against specifications and standards. Adherence to Specialized Industry Standards: Knowledge and application of specialized industry standards and codes. Ensuring all work complies with advanced health and safety regulations. Resources Needed: Specialized pipe materials (stainless steel, high-pressure pipes) Advanced fabrication tools and equipment (precision cutting tools, welding equipment) Measuring tools (micrometers, calipers) Testing equipment (pressure gauges, flow meters, leak detection tools) Safety equipment (PPE, advanced safety gear, first aid kit) Documentation (specialized industry standards, safety manuals) Special Considerations: Ensure all safety procedures are strictly followed during practical assessments. Provide additional support or resources if the learner demonstrates a need for further development in any area. Feedback and Review: Immediate verbal feedback during practical assessments. Detailed written feedback following each assessment activity. Final review meeting to discuss overall performance, strengths, and areas for improvement.

Assessor’s Feedback Learner: Ryan Britland Assessor/Tutor: Steve Smith, Pipefitting Assessor/Tutor Ryan has shown a strong grasp of the skills required for IPS05, including shaping materials under pressure, selecting appropriate tools, and using precise techniques to complete each bend. During this assessment, he demonstrated a solid understanding of the drawings and specifications for each component. While there were minor adjustments needed during some task sequences, Ryan showed improvement as he gained confidence in his approach, particularly in handling measurement and alignment. Ryan’s safety practices were exemplary, and he consistently managed risks with thorough pre-task hazard assessments. His attention to quality remained high, though there were minor variances that could be improved in future projects. Ryan completed the required documentation accurately, and his communication with the team ensured smooth coordination. He displayed a proactive attitude toward problem-solving, seeking guidance when necessary on more complex issues, which reinforced his learning. Overall, Ryan has shown effective progress in IPS05, demonstrating readiness to take on tasks requiring greater independence and precision.
Supplementary feedback
Learner: Ryan Britland I, Peter Wood, as a Witness to Ryan Britland’s performance, confirm that I observed him successfully completing the tasks of prepping a 3" carbon steel pipe and creating an expansion loop in a 2" pipe section. Ryan consistently demonstrated safe working practices and proficiency in using hand tools and hydraulic bending equipment. Throughout both tasks, Ryan showcased strong problem-solving abilities, particularly when he independently identified and addressed a defect in the pipe surface. He exhibited meticulous attention to detail, accurately checking dimensions and making precise adjustments to meet the required specifications. Ryan also maintained thorough and accurate documentation of each stage in the quality log. His performance reflects his ability to meet the high standards of the pipefitting trade and demonstrates significant progress in the IPS04 unit. Peter Wood
