BIG CITIES
1/5
More than half of all people in the world live in cities, and these cities are getting bigger and bigger. Metropolises are very large, multi-million-inhabitant cities. Lots of people want to live in cities because that’s where jobs, schools, museums, and big stores are. In some countries, people move from rural areas to urban areas looking for better lives.
What are cities like?
2/5
Cities have many different parts. In the center, there are often tall buildings where people work, shop, and have fun. Around the center, you’ll find the suburbs, neighborhoods with apartments, houses, and sometimes poorer areas. Many people drive or take buses, but traffic jams and pollution are problems.
Big differences
3/5
Cities can have rich areas with fancy houses right next to poor areas with simple homes. In some places, lots of people live in neighborhoods called slums without good water or trash services. Inequalities are enormous within and between cities around the world.
CITIES OF THE FUTURE
4/5
In the future, even more people will live in cities, so cities need to grow in smart ways. Engineers are working on clean cars and better public transportation. Cities are also trying to save energy by using things like solar panels and green buildings. Urban farms and community gardens help provide food without wasting resources.
Living Together
5/5
In cities, people from different backgrounds and incomes live close to each other. Cities of the future will try to mix neighborhoods so everyone can live together more easily. They also want people to help make decisions for their neighborhoods, with places to meet, share ideas, and plan together.
