Lobbying and Advocating

Know which politicians or political party in a devolved area will be interested in your issue.

Tailor your message to the local politicians. Language and tone are important. One size will not fit all!

Consider working with a local PR or public affairs agency who will have better insights to local politics.

Be culturally aware. This includes use of language (make sure you have Welsh translations), colours, flags. All have potential for pitfalls.

Learn how each legislature operates, how to put forward questions, who the key people are and when parliaments are in recess.

Build relationships with local politicians through regular, meaningful engagement.

Understand if the issue is devolved or not - this will shape your activity.

Keep up to date on local political issues. This will give you a sense of how big a priority your issue is (or not).

If you are a UK-wide organisation, speak to colleagues in each of the countries to understand better the nuances in-country.

Understand the current operating context and political, social, and economic priorities of each nation.
