Plate Tectonics and Mesorsarus Fossils

The continents of South America and Africa are on two tectonics plates and are part of a divergent plate boundary. Divergent plate boundaries move away from each other, this forms a mid-ocean ridge, an underwater mountain range. It can usually take millions of years for plates to separate. As a result at one point millions of years ago South America and Africa were connected.

Understanding the Fossil History

Scientists use rocks and fossils as evidence that the continets move because the same types of rocks form in the same area and fossils of the same organism are usually found in the same area, which makes up the fossil record. Scientists can also use maps of where certail fossils are found and these fossils can also be used to figure out the relative age and the absolute age of rock layers and fossils an the area.
