Sleep stages
N2- second stage of light sleep
- 45-55% of total sleep
- Body temperature goes down
- Heart rate and and breathing slow downs
- Brain waves continue to slow
- Muscles relax
- Eye movement stops
N1-Lightest sleep
5% of sleep
- 1st stage of sleep.
- This is the transtion phase from being awake to falling asleep.
- Easy to wake up from this stage
- Plays an important role in transtioning into other sleep stages
- Muscle activity decreases and some may occasionally experience brief muscle twitches
N-3 Deep sleep
10-15% of sleep
- Also called slow wave sleep becuase brain waves reach thier slowest
- Heart rate and breathing reach thier lowest levels
- Muscles are fully relaxed
- Body releases hormones critical for physical growth, bodily repair and immune support.
- Linked to cognative function such as learning memory and insight formation.
