Past simple

When to use simple past?

Actions or events that happened at a specific time in the past and already finished. Describe actions that were habitual or a routine in the past.

  • Positive form:
  • Subject + verb in past + complement

Used to

When to use "used to"?

"Used to" is used to describe habits, states, or repeated actions that happened in the past but no longer happen now. It emphasizes that there was a change from past to present. Using "used to" helps clarify that something was typical or true in the past but is different now.

Past progressive and

past simple.

The past progressive and the past simple are often used together to show how two actions or events relate to each other in the past.

  • To show an interrupted action: Use the past progressive for the ongoing action and the past simple for the action that interrupts.
  • To describe simultaneous actions.
  • To give background context: Use the past progressive to set the scene or give background information, and then use the past simple to describe what happened.

Would

When to use "would"?

Would" is a versatile modal verb often used to express repeated actions in the past. In storytelling, it adds a reflective tone, describing habits or intentions that no longer apply.

Past progressive

When to use past progressive?

The past progressive, also known as the past continuous, is used to describe actions that were ongoing at a specific moment in the past.

  • It is formed with "was/were" + the "-ing" form of the verb (e.g., was running, were talking)

This tense is helpful for setting the scene, showing actions in progress, or indicating a background action interrupted by another.
