What is the Visual Learning Style?

INFO

What Are the Visual Learner’s Characteristics?

They tend to have a vivid imagination and this can sometimes lead to daydreaming or mental wandering. Since they think primarily in pictures, they highly enjoy visual stimulation. They tend to grasp the underlying meaning behind body language and facial expressions. On the flip side, they may need to see a person’s body language and facial expression to fully understand what they are trying to say. They are typically good at reading maps and charts. When it comes to spelling, they oftentimes need to visualize the words in order to spell them correctly.

Study Tips for Visual Learners

Instead of writing out their work, allow students to represent their learning in visual and creative ways.

Help your child organize their notes like an outline.

Consider investing in stationery, stickers and other supplies that your child will enjoy looking at and using.

Provide them a personal whiteboard and dry-erase markers with plenty of colors.

Incorporate lots of concept maps in your studies.

Whenever possible replace words with symbols.

Use copious amounts of visual aids in learning.

Search engines can be a great tool for visual learners.

Visual Learning Strategies for Students

  • Color-code your notes, vocabulary words, and textbook.
  • Be sure to read the diagrams, maps, and other visuals that go along with text to help you remember it.
  • Make to-do lists in an agenda.
  • Study in solitude. You need to see things to remember them and often, any noise will distract you.
  • Take notes during lectures to capitalize on your visual learning style.
  • Sit near the front so you're better able to see everything.
  • Use outlines and concept maps to organize your notes.

Visual Learning Strategies for Teachers

  • Supplement verbal lectures with a handout, diagram, or other visuals.
  • Incorporate color into your presentations, the classroom, and handouts.
  • Give written instructions and expectations.
  • Vary your reading in class with solitary reading time so visual learners will take in the information better.
  • Vary your instructional methods (lectures, group work, solitary work, pairs, circles) and assignments so every learner is challenged.
  • Show your students how to complete a task instead of just telling your students how to complete a task.
  • Show students how to make great vocabulary flashcards.
  • Use video and still images to enhance your presentations.
  • Provide written feedback on assignments.

Benefits of Visual Learning

Visual learning isn't just a preference for pretty pictures or colorful diagrams. It's a powerful learning style that can significantly enhance memory retention, improve comprehension, and increase learner engagement. By presenting information visually, we can tap into the brain's powerful image-processing abilities and make learning a more effective and enjoyable experience.
