What is Epidemiology
- Epidemiology - a medical science that studies the distribution and determinants of diseases and disorders in a population.
- What does an epidemiologist do?
It's a branch of public health that aims to control and limit the spread of disease and other health problems. This is often done by tracking the rate of illnesses within a population.
Types of Epidemiological Studies
Case-Control (Retrospective) Study
Cohort (Prospective) Study
- Looking into the past
- 2 groups of people are studied/compared
- Those who do have the disease (case subjects)
- Those who don’t have the disease (control subjects)
- Study the effect BEFORE learning the cause
- Looking into the future
- Follows a population that is exposed to something over time to determine the potential effects.
