Basic terminology for stairs:

  • Rise - the height difference between the top surfaces of individual stair treads.
  • Going - the horizontal length of the tread from where it passes under the nosing of the tread above.
  • Pitch - the angle of the stairs measured across the nosings, known as the pitch line.

Stair measurements:

The approved document provides minimum and maximum measurements for the rise and going of private stairs. Different measurements may apply to other property types. Private stairs should have a maximum angle of 42 degrees, (with some exceptions detailed in other parts of the document that we won't consider today).

Guarding:

The edges of stairs, landings, and balconies are critical areas for safety considerations. In single dwellings, guard heights should be at least 900mm for landings and ramps, and 1100mm for external balconies, where the risk is higher. On stairs, the height is measured from the pitch line. If children under five are present, to prevent them getting stuck, make sure that a 100mm sphere cannot pass through the guarding. Avoid horizontal rails to discourage climbing.
