Welcome to The Room of Rhetoric Scenario: You were assigned to write an analysis of the documentary "Colleges Behind Bars" but once you started to write your outline, you were magically teleported to Eastern Correctional Facility. The only way out is to use Rhetoric Strategies to search for clues throughout the classroom to escape before the guards see you and the alarms go off. You only have 60 minutes
Welcome to the EN-101 Rhetorical Escape Room
Game Master: Professor Van Clef
Items you have as tools
- All of your notes from your EN 101 class
- Summary/Analysis/ Reflection In-class Activity from 10/28
- A pen and paper.
Clue #1
I THOUGHT I WOULD SAIL ABOUT A LITTLE "AND SEE THE WATERY PART OF THE WORLD "IS A WAY I HAVE REGULATING THE S-SPLEEN AND DRYING... "IT IS A WAY I HAVE OF DRIVING OFF THE SPLEEN AND REGULATING THE CIRCULATION."- Moby Dick
In 2001, Bard College became apart of the Eastern Correctional Facility's education patchwork. Based on the author, which Path has the prison college initiative gone? A Timeline will show you where you've gone and where you've been, remember dates, the moments, history, so follow the path to clue two.
- What Rhetorical strategy emphasizes on time?
Clue #2
When we have no chances of ever getting out, we start to believe we have nothing to lose. Having the opportunity of a second chance would make people less likely to commit violence inside.
In the documentary "Colleges Behind Bars", we hear the story of multiple prisoners, explaining their narratives about their struggles and trimuphs with their past and the hope for their future. Bard Prison Initiative has impacted more than just the students, but the community and its leaders. Jospeh Sanchez says that "Research on correction officers shows they often struggle with their physical and mental health. Our well-being is intertwined. Hopelessness and despair are contagious and toxic" Focusing on the who will take you to your next clue!
A decrease of 43% of recidivism in prisons if they are educated. The taxpayers don't believe the education can break the cycle free, but data and analytics don't tell lies that circumstances and biases hide behind. Surveys and interviews, and research is a must, for this Rhetorical Strategy we can trust.
Clue #4
We're almost at the end, the Pomp and Circumstance commence, the caps and gowns fly surrounded by their family and friends. The prisoners are transformed into scholars, their Second Chance at life. If only they will had emotional support by their community for the rest of their life. Identify the article and rhetorical strategy to move to final clue! start at 1:26-1:28
Clue #5
"As one who studies correctional education and prisoner reentry, I have seen how formal education changes how men and women in prison view themselves and their future. It gives incarcerated students a sense of confidence, builds self-esteem and increases maturity."
Your final clue is here and time is running out. Education is something not to rush about. New Jersey is a leader in innovation and care for people of all shapes, sizes, and scenarios, looking for support and schooling. The Step program is simple but not everyone can join, but adds to the Critical Conversation about college and qualified teachers and communities that we all enjoy, even the incarcerated. In her article one teacher talks about change, community, and second chances. Find her and you'll reach the finish line .
