Kilauea Shield Volcano in Hawaii

A shield volcano is named this way because of it's wide dome shape. It is typical a wide volcano with slow moving lava that results in quiet eruptions.

Mount Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro is a large composite volcano composed of three distinct volcanic cones: Mawenzi and Shira are extinct, Kibo is considered dormant.

Fun Facts

  • Composite volcanoes are large mountainous volcanoes with steep sides. They display the most violent form of eruptions and have fast moving lava.
  • Kibo stands at 19,354 ft
  • Mawenzi is 16,893 ft high.
  • Shira is the smallest at 13,140 ft.

Paricutin

Extinct Cinder Cone Volcano

Paricutin volcano, a natural marvel born from the Earth’s depths, emerged dramatically in 1943 in Mexican. Once an inconspicuous cornfield, it transformed into a powerful force of nature. Paricutin’s eruption unfolded swiftly, as molten lava burst forth, spewing ash and transforming the landscape. Rising over 1,300 feet, it became a symbol of both destruction and creation. Today, Paricutin stands frozen in time, a unique testament to the Earth’s ability to reshape itself.

Cinder Cone Volcanoes:

  • slopes made of cinders (burnt rock)
  • steep-sided
  • short lived, smaller volcanos
