Nets & Surface Area
Mrs. Ornes 6th Grade Mathematics Students
Purpose
Help you understand why nets are important and how they can be applied to real-life situations.
Objectives
Today, by the end of class you will be able to...
- Explain and demonstrate how a three-dimensional figure can be represented using a net made up of triangles and rectangles.
- Demonstrate and solve for the surface area using the net of the three-dimensional figure.
Directions
- Look through the following activity and explore the 8 different elements to learn about nets.
- Please take notes over the following material.
- We will discuss in groups and then as a class what we learned!
Why are nets important?
- They help us visualize a 3D figure to see the faces, edges, and vertices.
- They help us calculate the surface of a 3D figure in a convenient way.
Please click on the listening button to hear an explanation of finding the surface area of a 3D figure using a net.
Please watch this video about finding nets in real-life examples. After watching this video, please answer the following question in your notes. How do nets relate to the real-life example of packaging boxes?
