Lesson 3.4
- Describe the characteristics and formation of soil.
- Describe similarities and differences between properties of different soil types.
Soil Studies
SOIL FORMATION
SOIL TEXTURE
How to Use the Soil Texture Triangle
SOIL HORIZONS
How to Use the Soil Texture Triangle
- Find the percentages for each particle type.
- Start with the CLAY percentage, go to the RIGHT.
- Do SILT next, going towards the BOTTOM LEFT.
- Lastly, draw the line for SAND towards the TOP LEFT.
- The place where the lines intersect is the soil type.
These should always add up to 100%!
Soil Texture
Soil is made up of a combination of different sized particles (sand, silt, and clay). The combination of these particles determines how well the soil holds water.
- Too much sand prevents the soil from holding water.
- Too much clay prevents water from infiltrating and getting to the roots and increases runoff.
Water Retention of Soil Types
Soil Formation
Soil is formed when parent material is weathered, transported(erosion), and deposited. Then, organic material gets added to the top as living things grow and decay. Factors Impacting Soil Formation:
PARENT ROCK CLIMATE TOPOGRAPHY BIOLOGICAL FACTORS
Over time, soil layers build up and organize into layers called horizons.
