CHS NJROTC P.E Credits
Selayah Duarte, Franky Garcia, Kennedy Holley Grade 12
Background of issue
For a while, students had the option to take NJROTC at CHS instead of P.E.; NJROTC was able to "waive" the second year of P.E. that is required for students to graduate. Recently, our ROTC program got accepted to become a part of a federal program which means our programs in the district were monitored by the FPM (Federal Program Monitoring). The FPM went to TVHS and saw that they did not meet the requirement of 400 minutes of physical activity every 10 days. This resulted in the loss of NJROTC's P.E. credit credential.
Why is this a problem?
How does this effect future students?
1st
Students who have the space to take ROTC will most likely be unable to take ROTC all 4 years and meet the requirements for graduation. This will most likely cause a gap. This gap will have many colleges, if students wishes to apply, to wonder about the students committment.
2nd
Students who are involved in other prorgams such at AVID, CTE, drama, and other programs our schools offer, many students will be faced to make a choice. Even when NJROTC had it's P.E credits, many students had to make the choice already.
3rd
With the first two resons combined, many people will most liekly take NJROTC for a year or two. This would result in many people unable to participate in this program all 4 years unless the student took extra classes outside of school.
Resources needed
Documentation: Changes to the course layout and proof that we meet the requirements
District Connection: The use of the connections will help us better figure out how we will meet everything needed
Possible ways to address problem
Alter curriculum to meet the state standard of 400 minutes of physical activity every 10 days. We would have to get other schools in the TVUSD to comply to the changes as well.
Our Field meet team (Varisty team) and PT teams will be given a PE credit waiver; similar to JV and Varisty sports on campus
Obtain F credit (VAPA) for our drill teams; there have been other schools who were able to get this approved, which means we cn most likely do the same thing.
What has been done?
Background information
We have emailed Aimee Ricken, the director of the district of seconday education at TVUSD. She is helping answer any questions we have. From her help we have learned a lot about how this issue started.
We have looked over various angles on how to fix this problem for future students to continue taking JROTC.
One of our choices is to change the course of JROTC in order to meet the requiremnt of 400 minutes over 10 days. We have drafted various ideas on how to make this change.
Our goals for this project
Contextualize your topic
Specific --> Our biggest goal for this project is for NJROTC cadets to gain credit, hopefully, P.E. credit, for participating in the program. Measurable --> The best way to do so is to increase the physical; fitness time to meet the state standard of 400 minutes of exercise every 10 days. Our goal is to make these changes by this year and be resubmitted in hopes that we will gain our credit again.
Attainable --> We know we must make changes to our unit and other units within the TVUSD. We have drafted up different plans to meet the requirements. Realistic -->. We are prepared to present the other schools with various plans they can implement, a plan that will best suit each school's needs. If the schools don't comply, we are prepared to counteract with other plans we have; one is submitting our competitive teams as a VAristy team to be eligible for the P.E. waiver. Time --> We hope to make the changes of the course plan at CHS by December and hopefully have other schools in our district make this same change in January.

How group work is divided
We each divide the work and research that is needed
One person aisigns who does what
We meet in order to work with one another and fill each other in (about every week or every other week)
How is it sustainable beyong our initial work?
For whatever reason we are unable to finish our project, there are current juniors who have expressed their want to help and are willing to continue the project next year.
Once the credits get approved, it will allow students to continue taking the class without as much worry about how they will fit it into their schedule.
