HALLOWEEN
The history of Halloween In the beginning Halloween was a harvest festival. The Celsts who lived in Ireland, the UK and France celebrated on the 31 st October the end of summer and the beginning of winter. It was a harvest festival called SAMHAIN > end of summer.
They believed that the festival would make their Gods happy and they would be protected as well as their crops during then hard and long winter. They lighted huge fires, burnt crops and animals as a sacrifice to their Gods.
HALLOWEEN
WHERE DOES THE WORD HALLOWEEN COME FROM? The Celts became Christians after many years and they started to call the first day of November "ALL HALLOWS" an old English word to say All Saints' Day. As a consequence the night before the first of November was called by people All Hallow's Eve and this became Halloween.
WHY DO PEOPLE DRESS UP AT HALLOWEEN?The Celts believed that bad ghosts and spirits walked in the streets on Halloween night and they felt very scared about meeting them. So they began to dress up and wear masks so that the ghosts could believe they were other spirits and frighten them. Celts didn't want the ghosts to enter their homes and destroy the crops.
Soon people started to wear costumes and fancy dresses and organize parties to enjoy themselves.
