1. Norwegian prison system
index
This system is one of the best also because the safest prisons are very careful to the quality of life of the inmates and their goal is to recreate an environment that reproduces cities and everyday family life.
WHY IS THE BEST?
It represents the only detention system that respects human rights and aims to re-educate and reintegrate prisoners into society. The idea, according to Norwegian Justice Minister Knut Storberget, is that to reduce crime we must not just lock criminals in a room, but we must educate them and help them reintegrate into society.
NORWEGIAN PRISON SYSTEM
THE CHANGE IN THE NORWEGIAN PRISON SYSTEM
The Norwegian prison system has changed a lot recently. In the past, prisons were tough and mostly focused on punishing people. Today, the objective is more about helping prisoners get better and return to society. New prisons, like Halden, have nicer conditions with comfortable rooms and education programs. The idea is to support prisoners with respect, helping them improve and reducing the chances they will commit crimes again. The approach provides psychological support, courses, and growth opportunities. By treating prisoners with dignity and helping them start over, the system aims to reintegrate them into society. Because of this, fewer people reoffend in Norway compared to other countries.
HALDEN PRISON
Halden Prison, opened in 2010, is one of the most modern and humane prisons in the world. Its main objective is to rehabilitate Prisoners and helping them reintegrate into society. Prisoners live in private rooms with bathrooms, without bars, and take part in activities such as sports, cooking, and educational programs. The staff, who don't carry arms, interact with Prisoners to make trust and encourage their improvement. Despite the open and friendly place, Halden remains a maximum-security prison with advanced systems.
BASTOY PRISON
Bastoy Prison is one of the most famous prisons in Norway. It is located on an island in the Oslo Fjord. It is an open prison, meaning inmates can move freely around the island. The inmates live in small cottages, cook their own meals, and handle their own chores. In short, Bastoy Prison treats inmates with humanity, trust and respect, focusing on their rehabilitation.
OUR POINT OF VIEW
In our country the prison is for the most part still only punitive and there is no possibility of change. we think the Norwegian prison system is an example to follow because it shows that rehabilitation reduces long-term crime. Prison should be an opportunity to rethink one’s choices and rebuild one’s life, not a place that accentuates exclusion and suffering.
