Hadrian's Wall
Hadrian’s Wall is a Roman fortification located in present-day northern England, the place that marked the border of Britain, the northernmost region of the Empire.
What is the wall of Hadrian?
Hadrian’s Wall was built between 122 and 125 AD by the emperor Hadrian to protect the empire from the incursions of the Pictish tribes from Scotland. For the ancient Romans this work represented not only the end of their rule, but also of civilization: for them beyond the wall there were only savage barbarians.
Why is it famous?
The wall is 120 km long and extends from the Solway Fjord in the west to the mouth of the river Tyne in the east. There were forts and fortresses occupied by soldiers all along the wall. The defensive system also included two ditches and a road for military movements.
