Volleyball

Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan, physical director of the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Massachusetts. It was designed as an indoor sport for businessmen who found the new game of basketball too vigorous.

  • BASIC RULES

  • Volleyball is a team sport that can be played on indoor fields, outdoors and even on the beach (a modality known as beach volleyball).
  • The playing field is a rectangular field measuring 18m x 9m divided into two parts of the same size by a central line. It is surrounded by a free zone of at least 3m wide on all sides that protrudes into the playing area.
  • Three meters from the center line is the attack line that delimits the offensive zone.
  • The volleyball nets are variable in height. For men's competitions it measures 2'43m and for women's competitions 2'24m. At the top of the posts there are two rods or antennas that protrude 0.80m and delimit the area through which the ball must pass.

The ball is spherical and flexible, with 65-67 cm in circumference and 260-280 g in weight.During the game the ball must be hit continuously, it cannot be retained or taken by any player. The game consists of two teams and each team consists of six players on the field of play and a maximum of up to six substitutes.Players' contact with the ground is continuous, so they usually use joint protection. The surface cannot be rough or slippery

  • What are the characteristics of the volleyball ball?

  • The ball is spherical and flexible; 65-67 cm in circumference, 260-280 g in weight and internal pressure of 0.3-0.325 kg/cm². It is thus smaller and lighter than the balls used in basketball or soccer. It can be made of various materials, although the most comfortable and used is leather.
